Artist Notes:
Celebrating baby's first 100 days after birth is a very important milestone in Far Eastern culture. Relatives and friends give gifts like clothes and jewelry to be worn round baby's ankles and/or wrists. In the Chinese culture the baby will wear a longevity locket, called the Longevity Lock, which is said to bring the child good luck, longevity (long life for 100 years) and a bright future. In this illustration, we see a silver longevity lock worn with a red band around baby's wrist. The design on the lock features two fish swimming and the Chinese character for luck. In ancient times, babies die young due to poor sanitation and lack of proper medical attention. After a baby is born, parents would pay to cast a longevity lock for the child to ensure his or her long life. Worn around the neck or wrist, worn 1 month after birth or later, cast by the parents or maternal grandmother, the differing practices survive to this day.
