Artist Notes:
The ups and downs of the Purim story end with the triumph of the Jewish nation over their Persian enemies. The sage Mordechai played an important role in this reversal of luck. The Hebrew for this concept of changed luck, or turnaround, is inscribed on this card. This design shows Mordechai and his foil, Haman, in Persian dress. It is a play on motifs found in a deck of cards, in keeping with Purim themes of playfulness and fortune. Haman, the villain of the Purim story, was a court official whose fortunes eventually fall as Mordechai's rise. This jack card shows Mordechai triumphant, holding a sealed scroll, which represents the Purim megillah and letters bringing good news to the Jews, as well as a Torah scroll. The bottom half shows Haman holding a letter scroll describing the evil decision to destroy the Jewish nation and Persian coins, as well as a dagger. The club symbol is a four-leafed clover for Mordechai, torn for Haman.
