Artist Notes:
This card is appropriate for the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shevat or the fifteenth day of the Hebrew month of Shevat (January). This Jewish Earth Day holiday recognizes the Biblical seven-year agricultural cycle that culminates with the Sabbatical year in which no tithes (or portions of produce) were contributed to the Priests in the Temple and all produce grown in that year were declared ownerless and free to take by any who needed it. This holiday is also based on a quotation from the Book of Deuteronomy (20:19)"Man is as the tree of the field." because our fruits are the Torah and good deeds. Traditionally, grain products and certain fruits native to Israel are eaten: olives, grapes, dates, figs and pomegranates. Under a traditional full moon, these fruits form the first letter of their Hebrew names. The four cups of wine are traditionally served at the Tu B'Shevat seder, a symbolic celebratory meal that originated with Kabbalistic scholars in the 16th century.
