Artist Notes:
This card offers congratulations (Mazal Tov) to a Jewish boy or man upon his Bar Mitzvah with my original aphorism written in 1988 for my son's Bar Mitzvah. An ornate, antique yad (Torah pointer and wine cup (kiddush cup) represent elements of the Bar Mitzvah ceremony. Since a Torah scroll may not be touched directly for reading, it is necessary to use a yad (pointer traditionally in the shape of a hand) to facilite reading. The Bar Mitzvah ceremony formally recognizes the learning, blessings and duties of a Jewish boy or man following his inclusion into the community. It is customary for a boy to become a Bar Mitzvah at his 13th birthday. On a future anniversary (maybe 20-50 years later in life) of that initial ceremony, many men choose to repeat the ritual to confirm a renewal of their commitment to the laws and practices of Judaism.
