This card depicts a beautifully drawn Barred Grass Snake drawn from a photograph taken by my garden pond. We only have three indigenous snakes in the U.K., the European Adder is venomous and the Grass snake is not. Unfortunately most people can't tell the difference which results in many harmless Grass Snakes being inadvertently killed each year. Grass Snakes mainly eat frogs and toads so unsurprisingly they are good swimmers and are most often seen adjacent to ponds and streams.
