NAVAJO BUS STOP by Malcolm R. Watt

Malcolm R. Watt was born in Pineville, Kentucky in 1927. He began his formal art training at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky as a student of the late Victor Hammer, formerly Dean of the Art Department at the University of Austria in Vienna. Watt transferred to the University of Arizona in 1950 and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1952.

He worked as a cowboy and professional movie actor prior to pursing his career as a freelance artist. He completed hundreds of paintings depicting Indians of the Southwest and of cowboy life. He retained a deep interest in Native American cultures. Mr Watt died in 2002 in Tucson, Arizona.

Navajo Bus Stop is one of a series of paintings relating the life style of the Navajo to popular urban cliches. The painting took over two years to complete and was purchased by William S. Fulton from an Arizona State Fair Exhibit and now is at the Amerind Museum in Dragoon, Arizona.

The reproduction oil was painted on canvas 20x24" in 2023 by Carolyn Grossman slightly smaller than the original Watt painting.
