Artist Notes:
Leif Erikson Day, celebrated on October 9th, is a holiday that honors the sailing of Leif Erikson, on a large carved wooden boat that had dragon head at the bow and dragon's tails on the stern of the boat. He was the son of Erik the Red, who settled Greenland and Erik was born in the 10th century. He sailed on his boats to North America around the year 1000CE and named the area he explored Vinland, making him one of the first Europeans in North America. This card has one of Erik's boats in the design, with a huge sail of red and white stripes, above the wooden dragon head at the bow of the ship. Additional wording of "Leif Erikson Day" fills the ocean water, below the ship. The inside wording of the card says "A day to honor the Norse explorer Leif Erikson, believed to be the first European to reach North America, and the heritage of Nordic communities in the United States."
