Happy Canada Day!
Jul 1st, 2008, 4:29am

Clearly this is not a big holiday for our Canadian friends, as I made up 6 Canada Day cards and received only 1 click on only one of them. Tongue

The GCU Traffic Analytics also indicate only 1 search in the whole month of June too for anything "Canada" related.

Anyhow, here are my cards if you want a smile:
http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/community/store.asp?store_id=1156&CGID=3 18&num=

This suggests to me that GCU might try running some Holiday related promos on certain targeted websites.  For instance, for Canada Day, why not place a banner or button ad on popular related Canadian websites such as these:
http://www.pch.gc.ca/special/canada/index_e.cfm
http://www.celebratecanada-ab.ca/en/

If GCU needs some promo $$, I'd be willing to supply some of my vast ( Tongue) earnings into a pool to help fund an ad just to see if it generates sales.  Would you?

Tom, I got some big chuckles out of your Canada Day cards.  Love your humor!   GrinRegarding the ad, it would be interesting to find out if such a button placement would bring in any sales.

Hi Tom
THanks for the greetings. Actually it is a very special holiday in Canada with alot of celebrations, concerts events and family picnics and  getogethers. The day ends with professional fireworks displays, some are orchestrated to music. My favorite is the 1812 overture, which ends with a canon shot.
It just isn't a card sending day.

Yeah I hear ya!  Our Memorial Day is huge and I don't see that it is a huge card sending day.  Same with Labor Day and well July 4th is probably the best card sending day out of these 3.  Anyway have a great day everyone!

Hi Tom,
Loved your Canada Day cards, they gave me a good laugh Grin

I did four Canadian themed cards for the Holiday, but no sales for them. Actually I didn't expect much, as it isn't a card sending type of holiday here that I'm aware of. Mostly fireworks and celebrations in the parks, ect.

Hi Jacqueline,

Thanks for the reply and compliment.  I never thought about whether Canada Day was a card-sending Holiday or not. (Duh!)  Anyway, fun making the cards either way.

I must say, you are a very exceptional Artist.  I'm glad I went to see your shop.   Cheesy WOW.  Some of the best I've seen!  Very clean-looking work.  Amazing.

Hope sales are good!

So are there other Canadian Holidays we should ramp up for?

Thank you very much Tom for your generous comment. Glad you dropped by my store and liked my work Smiley

Sales were pretty good but are slowing now. That time of year though for sales in general, so to be expected.

We have our Memorial day is called Rememberance Day, but again, not sure it will do well for cards.

My best suggestion is to do some on the Major holidays but with a Canadian theme. Lots of Canadians in US and other places and like to send cards home. Or from Canada to other Countries.

Have a great week Smiley

ps...here's a link to a list of Canadian Holidays (note many are the same as yours, but fall on different dates)

Probably a better offer would be to encourage these sites to become GCU Card Seller and post a widget on their sites.  You game to contact them w/ the pitch?

I don't know of a way to make a Canadian-card only Widget to advertise or direct shoppers to all of GCU's Canadian cards, plus, frankly, I think the ad needs to match the ad requirements of the particular target site.  Standard ad types and sizes would be easier to "sell" to websites than the Widget which is inflexible.

Like this one:

Also, most websites have an ad revenue model already based on click-through plans or a flat fee.  It would be easier to sell them a GCU ad if we used these models rather than the "unusual" card-seller revenue model.

This concept of internet advertising might make a good discussion in the marketing thread.  I, for one, would like "permission" to create and place GCU banner ads as a reseller, like the one above, but GCU needs to permit this and facilitate some mechanism for certain card groups (ie: Canadian cards) to be brought up when the ad is clicked.

I don't get it with the Canadian only card thing.  Many of the cards are designed by Americans assuming what Canadians will buy.

I think before something like this is launched, a little more research into Canadian buying habits is due. Waiting until bulk shipping is available to Canada might also be a smart move.

The Canadian Card discussion is just an example.  It was used to illustrate the idea of preparing targeted ads for targeted sites to gain exposure for GCU in certain niche areas.

There are hundreds of other niche ads that could be placed on niche sites to gain new GCU customers.
Such as :
Pet greeting cards on various Pet sites
Romance cards on various Romance sites
Humor cards on various Humor sites
Religious cards on various Religion sites

and so on.

I don't believe the standard widget would be very effective in these cases.

Tom,
I have a question about banner ads.  I have never seen any of these on my computer.  I do block everything pop up related that it is possible to block because I have to be honest I hate these pop ups.  Are these banner ads something different than a pop up?
