Open Wide and Say Ahh for Doctors’ Day

National Doctors’ Day was proclaimed an official holiday by U.S. President George H.W. Bush in 1991 and is observed annually on March 30. Doctors’ Day honors all physicians who make a difference in the lives of their patients every day. The date of the observance – March 30 – is the date the first general anesthetic was used in surgery by Dr. Crawford Long, who removed a tumor from his patient’s neck.

The first unofficial Doctors’ Day celebration was held in 1933 in Windor, Georgia, and included both sending greeting cards and laying flowers – particularly red carnations – on the graves of deceased doctors.

In the United States alone, there are more than 700,000 physicians and surgeons. Each of them deserves recognition for their dedication to the health and well-being of their patients. Greeting Card Universe offers a unique collection of Doctors’ Day cards to help you celebrate this important occasion.

National Pig Day

In the United States, March 1 is National Pig Day, a time to celebrate America’s  favorite barnyard animal – the pig! The holiday originated in Texas and quickly spread to include official celebrations in several Midwestern states.

Why do people love pigs? They’re pink and round, they make funny noises, sometimes come in spots, are the subjects of nursery rhymes and stories, and are as smart as dogs (some say smarter). Pigs are useful, too. Without pigs, we wouldn’t have pork chops, sausages, or bacon! And certain pig breeds are kept as pets including pot bellied pigs and miniature or micro pigs.

Greeting Card Universe offers pig lovers plenty of pig themed greeting cards for many different occasions.  Stock up on cards for your family and friends – buy 5+ cards, get FREE SHIPPING in the United States! A Brief History of the Tooth Fairy

National Tooth Fairy Day in the United States is February 28  a day set aside to honor the tradition observed by many parents when a child begins to lose their baby or “milk” teeth at around age five or six. Although rituals about the disposal of children’s teeth have ancient origins, and people in many countries follow similar customs, the Tooth Fairy as we know her didn’t come along until around the turn of the century.

European immigrants brought with them their mother country’s traditions, such as the “tooth fee” paid to children when they lost their first tooth (mentioned in the 13th century Norse writings). In the later Victorian era, fairies became very popular in works of fiction and children’s plays. Around the early 1900s, a “tooth fairy” emerged who gave rewards in exchange for lost teeth.

The Tooth Fairy a we visualize her didn’t go mainstream in America until the 1950s. Today’, many parents and grandparents use the opportunity to teach their children and grandchildren about the importance of good oral and dental hygiene. Dentists and dental hygienists have also paired with the Tooth Fairy to spread the message.

And of course, the Tooth Fairy still leaves money under the pillow in exchange for a tooth.

Greeting Card Universe offers one of a kind cards to congratulate a child for losing a tooth to send to your nieces, nephews, sons, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as they go through this important rite of passage from childhood to youth.

Amazing Things You Didn’t Know About Presidents Day

In the United States, Presidents Day – the third Monday in February – is a federal holiday which used to be called Washington’s Birthday, and originally celebrated the birthday of  the first American president, George Washington. Today, Presidents Day honors all U.S. presidents, although Washington and Abraham Lincoln (who also has a birthday in February) are the most commonly used symbols.

In the spirit of this patriotic American holiday, here a a few lesser known facts about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

George Washington, Poet: As a teenager in love, Washington tried his hand at an acrostic – a type of poem in which the first letter of each line spells a word, or in this case, the  lady’s name. He didn’t quite complete it. Since only two poems authored by him have survived, this is a rare example of his romantic side. You can read both poems here.

Booth Saved Lincoln … Sort Of: In 1864. Robert Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s son, fell off a train platform directly in the path of an oncoming locomotive. He was pulled to safety by a famous Shakespearean actor named Edwin Booth. Does the surname sound familiar? A few months later, Edwin’s brother, John Wilkes Booth, would assassinate President Lincoln in Ford’s Theater.

Washington Had a Temper Like Well Aged Dynamite: George Washington was famous for his temper. His contemporaries remarked upon his “ungovernable passion” and he was known for his outbursts of cursing when irritated or frustrated. Afterward, he would become calm.

Lincoln Enjoyed a Good Cockfight: At the time, cockfighting and other blood sports were considered normal, socially acceptable  entertainment for gentlemen. While he clearly enjoyed his family’s pets – which included dogs, cats, and a turkey – Lincoln received his nickname “Honest Abe” not for his political honesty, but because he was an honest referee in the cockfighting ring.

Greeting Card Universe offers fun and unique Presidents Day cards for you to exchange with friends and family, some featuring representations of Washington and Lincoln.

5 Little Known Valentine’s Day Facts

Valentine’s Day is observed on February 14 each year in North America, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, and France. The holiday has surprisingly ancient origins, and may have its beginning in the Roman festival of Lupercalia. The later martyrdom of two Christian clerics named Valentine caused the Catholic Church to declare the feast day of  St. Valentine’s, which as the centuries passed became more associated with romance and love.

Today, we honor  all types of relationships, not just romantic connections. Friends and family members, and even pets, are as much a part of the celebration as lovers and spouses. To put you in the mood, here are some surprising facts about Valentine’s Day you may not know.

Stupid Cupid: Just after commercial Valentine’s Day Cards became available in the 19th century, “vinegar valentines” made their appearance. These crude, insulting, mean spirited cards pointed out the recipient’s shortcomings and failures. Today’s vinegar valentines or Anti-Valentine’s Day cards focus more on the holiday itself and are more likely to be humorous.

By the Numbers: $448 million will be spent on candy, including 58 million pounds of chocolate, and more than 150 million cards will be exchanged. What about champagne and sparkling wine? $8.6 million to buy 174,000 gallons. That’s a lot of bubbly!

It’s a Secret: Receiving a Valentine’s Day card from a secret admirer (or letting your crush know your feelings) isn’t a new idea, although its become a tradition. People have been declaring their love for that special someone  anonymously for centuries. Even elementary schoolchildren give “secret admirer” valentines to classmates.

Let’s Have a Conversation: Those little candy conversation hearts that have become synonymous with Valentine’s Day in the U.S. were first developed in 1866. Around 8 billion Sweethearts® are produced annually – enough to circle the Earth twice!

Who Loves You, Fido?: In recent times, one of the most popular and fastest growing trends in Valentine’s Day is buying gifts for pets. Americans spend $367 million celebrating the day of love with their rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, horses, ferrets, parrots, goldfish, and other pets.

Greeting Card Universe offers unique Valentine’s Day cards for every member of your family, friends, coworkers, and all the other special people in your life … including Mr. Fuzzykins.

5 Interesting Things About Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is celebrated every February 2 in the United States. Each year, Punxsutawney Phil in Philadelphia and other groundhogs (and occasionally prairie dogs) across the nation are coaxed of their holes. According to folklore, if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. However, if he doesn’t, an early spring is predicted. This date is also Candlemas Day, a Christian holiday with traditional weather lore attached to it.

If Candlemas be fair and bright,
Winter has another flight.
If Candlemas brings clouds and rain,
Winter will not come again.

Here are five interesting facts about Groundhog Day. Let’s hope the groundhog doesn’t see his shadow this year!

  • 5. The custom of winter weather prediction in February using a burrowing animal comes from Germany, where the folklore encouraged folks to watch a badger come out of its hole on Candlemas Day to see if winter would last longer. When Germans immigrated to the United States, they brought the custom with them, but substituted the groundhog (or woodchuck), a much more common animal.
  • 4. While Groundhog Day is celebrated by many people in many U.S. States, it it not an official holiday.
  • 3. Why was the Groundhog Day weather prediction important to early settlers? They were primarily farmers. Lacking accurate weather forecasting, they turned to folklore to learn when they should plant their crops.
  • 2. The earliest American reference to Groundhog Day comes from 1841, in the diary of James Morris of Berks County, Pennsylvania.
  • 1. In Alaska, Groundhog Day is known as Marmot Day because they aren’t many groundhogs in the Last Frontier.

Whether the prediction falls on the side of an early spring or a longer winter, Greeting Card Universe helps you celebrate Groundhog Day with friends and family!

Tu B’Shevat

The New Year for Trees, Tu B’Shevat, begins in 2013 on the evening of January 25 and ends the evening of January 26.  This is a period when, according to Jewish tithing law, the age of fruit trees is calculated.

Tu B’Shevat is also known as the Jewish Arbor Day. It’s become the custom in Israel and other countries to plant trees. The festival generally includes eating fruits like pomegranates, figs, dates, grapes, and olives, or dried fruits.

“And when ye shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food, then ye shall count the fruit thereof as uncircumcised: three years shall it be as uncircumcised unto you: it shall not be eaten of. But in the fourth year all the fruit thereof shall be holy to praise the LORD withal. And in the fifth year shall ye eat of the fruit thereof, that it may yield unto you the increase thereof: I am the LORD your God.” — Leviticus 19:23-25

Greeting Card Universe offers unique Tu B’Shevat cards in traditional and modern designs to let you celebrate nature’s revival in beautiful ways with all your family and friends.

Save a Life – Give Blood

January is National Blood Donor Month, a time when many individuals and organizations highlight the urgent need for volunteer  blood donations.

Most healthy people are eligible to give blood, but less than 10% of eligible potential donors actually do so.  Every day, patients in hospitals and treatment facilities receive blood transfusions. Without the donations of blood given by generous volunteers,  vital medical procedures couldn’t be performed and lives would be lost.

If you want to give blood, check for blood drives in  your community.

Greeting Card Universe appreciates the difference volunteers make in many people’s lives and offers unique birthday, holiday, and Thank You Volunteer greeting cards designed especially for organizations and individuals to express their thankfulness to those who give of themselves.

New Year’s Resolutions

Around the world and throughout history, many civilizations have observed celebrations for the New Year. The oldest recorded festivities were held in Babylon 4,000 years ago. Today, countries around the globe mark the end of the old year and the beginning of the new on December 31, New Year’s Eve.

In America, it’s customary to watch fireworks, attend parties, count down the minutes to the New Year with friends and family, watch the ball drop in Times Square, sing “Auld Lang Syne,” and make resolutions, of course. The  most popular resolutions have to do with self improvement like losing weight or quitting smoking.

When did this particular custom begin? Once again, it’s the ancient Babylonians we can thank for this annual tradition. To start the new year right, they made promises to the gods to do things like return borrowed tools and pay their debts. Sound familiar?  Romans continued the idea, and the tradition has remained part of New Year celebrations down to the 21st century.

If a friend or loved one has made a New Year’s resolution – whether to get organized, eat less, or take on the serious challenge of battling an addiction – make sure to offer your help. Let them know they’re not alone. Our collections of Addiction Recovery cards and Recovery Encouragement cards will send your warmest, most heartfelt messages of support where they’re needed most.
