AngryI can't believe the reviewers are declining my own photos I take. You won't see anymore new cards from me on here. I am consentrating on my other site Zazzle. I get more sales on there then here. They don't pick my work to death either. Some people must like my work on there. I have the same stuff on there that I get declined on here. People have been buying it too. Happy Sales to everyone!!!!Sad

have they given you reasons for the declines?  I don't understand what is happening - I'm hearing more and more complaints.

Jonice, I am posting again as I am very curious if your declines came with any comments.  I'm finding that my declines are coming with some comments and some times I agree and other times not.  For the times I disagree, I've gotten some additional help and either get the card submitted or a "second opinion" and I move on from there.

I've heard several people complaining about the new process but I've become very relaxed now with this new process as the reviewers I've had at least provided me with feedback and I was able to either make adjustments or engage in a request for Administrators to take a look.  It's most definitely a learning process - it's been a bit frustrating - but overall, it's for everyone's benefit.  So, I'm good with it as long as I know what's expected.  For illustrators/painters, I know there are fewer clear cut rules unlike photography but I do know now it's for the best.

I hope you can perhaps post an example of a declined card and what was said, if any comments were made.  Maybe post such cards to the Critique Forum - I can't say enough about it - it's been a HUGE help to me.

Jonice, I'm going to gently press - what do you mean by their preference?  Can you show us an example for the sake of understanding why you are so upset?  Saying their preference doesn't tell me anything without knowing what you mean to demonstrate your unhappiness with what was said.

I think we've all experienced this and in some cases, I've understood the reasoning with further discussion.

I had three cards recently declined like this one (link below) that was already approved a few months ago. Two similar cards were also approved a few months ago, one of which was purchased by a relative. Everyone who saw it thought it looked great. (Of course, they might be biased...)  When printed, it's very dramatic with its silver, bronze and black tones.  I can understand the comment about the cropping, although you don't have to have the entire drum kit in the design.

Also, this is NOT a photo (see review notes below). It's a graphic design intended to be stark and dramatic and not cutesy for drummers.  I was inspired by a nephew who plays the drums.   I've paid close attention to the cards that young people I know have bought, and they are quirky and funny, many of which would not be considered polished, even some cards from Hallmark.  I need to mine that quirky vein of humor, but it's hard to find it.

I understand and appreciate the review board's criticism, however. I will at some point re-make this card, based on some of the criticism from the review board.  Would I change the angle and cropping in a future drum kit card -- probably.  Would I change the stark quality of the design...No. I like it! It printed very nicely, too.

"Based on our review process your card has been: Declined for the following reason(s):

Please Note: Thank you for submitting this artwork to GCU however we're sorry that your submission has not met our Marketability Standards and has been declined due to the following reason: the photo has many elements giving it a snapshot appeal that lacks in professional polish like the cropping, lighting, background and filter. It is very difficult to capture a studio quality image without controlled elements like background and light. Thank you for your understanding."

Hi Catherine,

Love the concept of your card! For what it's worth, here's my take on this image and perhaps part of what the reviewer saw . . .

This has excessive use of filtering which does not make the photograph less of a snapshot, but actually enhances the minor faults in the original photo.  Filtering needs to be used lightly to enhance the image and give a 'feeling' of another type of medium ...

AND posterizing or solarization effects are not a great visual choice for greeting card designs.  This style is intended for posters so that when viewed from far away you can identify the subject because the details have been removed.  When viewed in something small, like a greeting card, these techniques seem harsh, chunky, muddy and pixelated to naked eye.

Just thought I'd pass the tidbit on about the filter choice . . . but it's only one woman's opinion  Grin

Thanks for your input, Doreen.  I liked how the card looked when I saw it in person, but I agree that some of the background elements should have been removed.  I liked that it was a more elemental drum kit. What I would change in a new version would be to remove most of the background elements and change the cropping and angle of the shot. I liked the posterization feel, maybe it's the junior version of band flyers.  Grin

Could be  Grin

I know that I did lots of this type of manipulation many years ago when I was learning digital tools.  When I headed in to the gallery and licensing art world, boy was I crushed to be told over and over again that these heavily filtered images were the sign of an inexperienced artist and not acceptable in the art world   Grin
Needless to say, I learned from that and have never ventured back . . . so it is all about what you like and what you want to use the image for in the long run Smiley

Grin Thanks, Doreen. I see a lot of band flyers with a rough, raw look. As I noted in my first post in this thread, I've been interested in what cards the young people I know buy, and I've been surprised to see how primitive the designs are.  It's hard to achieve the right raw look, which may just be a super advanced ultra polished look. Anyway, I'm still trying to crack the cool code. In a future drum kit card, I would probably still use the same method, but change the composition and add some other elements to the design.  Anyway, the recipient of my card liked it! He's ten...He thought it was cool.  Cool

You must have done something right. You have more approved cards in your store than I do.  Tongue
