Question for Mindy
Sep 29th, 2011, 2:19am

I've just been making my first ever photo cards and I found it quite difficult to find all the information/instructions I needed in the original thread about them as it has become so long  Grin

I wonder whether it would be possible to have all the guidelines in one place - such a sticky thread- including advice on categories, titles, keywords etc. as well as the nuts and bolts of creating a photo card.

One thing that I didn't know about, which has caused the reviewers and me a lot of extra work, was leaving 'wiggle room' for the customers to place their photos. Maybe it was somewhere in the instructions and I missed it? But, as I said, it's been quite a challenge, hunting down all the info from that original long thread.

I had the only photo card I made returned because of the lack of "wiggle room" I told the reviewer I had no idea what he/she was talking about. I have made dozens of templates over the years that I can insert a picture but never heard of "wiggle room".

I did receive a reply: Thank you for your note regarding your question about the transparent zone blue line for photo/text  placeholders.

"When you define the area of a photo/text placeholder, you will see the placeholder outline (not a blue line) when you a) create it,  and b) edit it.  And you will only see 1 box at a time when in edit mode. This can make positioning the placeholder boxes a bit challenging.

However, after you have placed the photo and /or text placeholder boxes, you can see their blue outlines to check their size and placement before you submit.  To do this, use the Print / Margin Preview view of the card in Manage Cards and check the Transparent Zone checkbox,  and click “Create Preview”. Now you will see the placeholder boxes you have created outlined in blue and you can check for correct size and placement."

Since I had no idea what the reviewer was talking about I deleted the card.

Judy and Terry, thanks to you both for posting!

Okay, I wanted to let you both know that I've had this problem, too and was told about the "blue line," but could never see it, even in the Print/Margin Preview.  Now I see that I wasn't doing it right!

So, especially for Terry, and I'm sorry that you ended up deleting your card in frustration, here's where you can find that "Blue Line" and get the "wiggle room:"

Under Images & Cards, there's a drop-down -->  Manage Cards

From Manage Cards, you'll see your card images and their status.

Look for Print/Margin Preview and click it.  You'll see your card with some yellow and red lines.  To get the BLUE LINES, you have to click the Transparent Zone box and then click the orange Create Preview button!  Then the magical BLUE LINE shows up!

This was the step that I was missing!  So, Terry, thanks for posting the reviewer's instructions.  I never knew how to make that Blue Line show, until now!

What would really help us in creating the photo cards, however, would be to be able to see the BLUE LINE when we're actually making the cards, so we can make changes in the creation stage, not make the card, then go back and edit it.

And, yes, Judy, a sticky would be a good idea.

Thanks, again, to you both!

Judy, here's the link to Mindy's forum posting about the photo cards.  The instructions are in the initial post by her, and she includes a link to Tom Rent's Video on Wiki:

Hopefully, this will get you started!

Hi Penny, thanks for that but it's really basic and leaves out a lot of detail, such as the 'wiggle room' and not making the text box too big (another thing I got wrong in some of my cards, though it was the only way I could stop the text showing up double line-spaced in the previews).

There's also some ambiguity about how to describe, categorise and tag age-specific, year-specific, person-specific customisable cards. I hunted through the thread and found a little bit about it, and thought I was following what Mindy said. But the reviewer thought otherwise.

I should imagine that  a lot of queries have come up as we go along and, as the reviewers said to me, it's a learning process for all of us, them included.

Which is why it would be good to have definitive instructions all in one place where we can access it easily.

Hi, Judy,

I'm sorry that the posting wasn't very helpful.  And I understand better what you were asking now, but, you're right, there isn't one place where we can access this type of info.  I'm guessing that one of our industrious members will come up with a video, lens, or blog that will answer those questions.

I did see that you have designed some nice looking photo cards, so I'd say that you're on the right track!

Hi Penny - no need to apologise. I'm sure there will be someone reading this who is still at the stage of getting started and your link is the place to go for that. And thank you for your kind words about my designs  Smiley

I was really glad that you explained about how to see the blue line - somehow I hadn't realised we could do that.

Now I'm wondering whether that is what the reviewers see when they review our cards?

I've been a bit puzzled because one reviewer obviously couldn't see what I was seeing in the Card Preview that we get when we're still in the process of making the card - before the 'Save Project' stage. She thought I had a spare blue text box, when, in fact there was text in it - very confusing, though I want to say that all the reviewers I've been involved with these past few days have been marvellously helpful  - and patient!

Hi, Judy,

As for the Blue Line, yes, I do believe that this is what the reviewers are talking about.  I only realized how to see it from reading Terry's post, with the reviewer's explanation.  It's pretty much been a mystery to me, up 'til now.

Per Judy:

Yes, the Print Margin Preview is exactly what the reviewers see.  They see the trim line (red), safety zone (yellow) and for Custom Front cards the transparent zones (blue).

The transparent zone checkbox should be set to ON for artists' Custom Front cards.  It sounds like it is not.

We will look into this as well as some of your other suggestions.

Exactly!  The intent was to have it defaulted ON to make it easy and effortless.  We will make this happen.

Hi, Terry,

From your manage cards page, make sure the you're on "List View."  Your card covers will be displayed, stacked, with your title, keywords, etc.  Look for the last text link, the one that reads:  Print/Margin Preview.  If you click that, you'll be taken to another page where your card cover will display for you with the red, yellow and now the BLUE line, too!

Looks like Mindy was able to get that blue line turned on for us!

That blue line will show around your transparent area and any text box(es) that you've made.

Hope that this helps!
