AngryI can't believe the reviewing process on here anymore. Do you ask everyone on here where they get all their pictures they use for their cards? I know darn well they don't make them up themselves!!!!! I had to delete 7 of my cards already. Not very happy!!!!!!! cry

Jonice, you have really lovely cards!  We are all going through the same thing here.  If that helps you at all.  I didn't need or want another stressor in my life so I am just trying to roll with it instead of let it get me down.  Truthfully some of my cards needed to go bye bye anyway.  I'm trying to step back, look at the declined card and hopefully say to myself...yes I agree this card might not have the most professional look to it.  It's just my take.  I hope this helps you some and I hope you feel better.

Yes, Jonice I believe they do ask everyone where the photo came from.  There are many people who use photographs from around the internet, but do not provided proper credit and that's a no no.

If all your photographs are yours, then you can do yourself and the reviewers a favor by letting them know that each time you submit a card.  Lots of us have statements we use such as on this card of mine:

I think this is now the policy for all cards (?) mine are drawn, but they always ask if they are mine/I own the rights to them. So, now I do what Doreen suggested, on the notes to reviewer section I always make sure to write "I am the artist, I own all rights to" ect. If you do this when you submit, it shouldn't be an issue. Good luck!

Oh they do, I had to supply every single poser file and I now make it a policy
to write on the notes to the reviewer if I use someone elses work.

It's the fastest way like Doreen said, if you include the image detail then you
are fine, normally I do it on one card then the rest go behind it saving oodles
of time I have found Smiley

Take heart though we are all having the same thing, it takes time to get
used to it Smiley

Huge hugs

It is common practice to ask the artist about the source, especially when an image or elements of an image are found elsewhere on the internet, to make sure they have the proper rights to use the image in this manner: commercial usage on POD paper greeting cards.

Too often artists use 3rd party creative with out confirming they can use it in this manner and without reading the details in the Terms of Use.

Including this information in your Note to Reviewer field as suggested by artists on this thread is an excellent suggestion to speed up the process.

BUT before that it is more important for you to check the Terms of Use of your image source.  It is the responsibility of each and every artist who chooses to use 3rd party creative to do so.

I'm so sorry but I don't know where to put this post and it sort of falls into this category.  I understand the whole thing about cards being declined.  We went over alot of it yesterday and the day before, so i get it.  What I do not understand is the reviewer interjecting his/her opinion/comments or remarks about the card.  Please read below and tell me if you wouldn't be upset.  Ok, so the card is declined fine,  but did they really need to add those rude comments?  It feels like a direct jab and in my opinion I would rather not have a "specific explanation", just tell me my card is declined.  Tell me that it just doesn't meet GCU's marketability standards, but the extra comments are not right... Please consider creating a list for people like me that does not want or need specific judgemental remarks from the reviewers!  Thank you... undecided

"Please Note: As GCU’s collection of cards hits 500,000 we are establishing marketability standards and saying “no thank you” to some cards. Thank you for submitting this artwork to GCU, however we find that this card no longer meets our marketability standards as this card’s front image will not translate well into / result in a professional looking greeting card, specifically: this design is very cluttered, messy and busy and lacks commercial appeal. thank you for your understanding."

Hi Cara,
We heard loud and clear from artists that they wanted to know exactly what about the design put it below the bar.

If others would like to share their opinions here we're all ears but it will have to be one way or the other - all or nothing.  To keep things efficient we can't manage a list of those who want the constructive critism and those who don't, sorry.   undecided

There is a good post here for artists by artists re: accepting rejection:

I don't care if they HATE my art, they still have no right...I didn't ask them for their opinion or their critique did I?  I have nothing to prove to a reviewer whom I will never meet.  If they said what they said in a constructive manner I might be more open to learning something from the email.  The way it was written, I can only take offense.  My gripe is NOT with the rejection, it is with the EXTRA, unnecessary, unsolicited, criticism that is NOT constructive.  It's all in the way you say what you say as to how a person might take it.  Show some compassion....Why can't people just be nice?  Does it hurt that much?  I'm really dissappointed.  cry

Cara, it is not a critique of your card. It is an explanation as to why it has been rejected. I am sure we would all be up in arms if our cards were rejected without any explanation.
The artists have told GCU that this is how we want it done.
Having a card rejected hurts I know, but having a card rejected and not knowing why would be much worse.

I agree with Norma.  To not know, specifically, why a design was rejected would serve no purpose.  If I know why, then I can learn and improve.  When I got my first declined notice, I would say I was surprised, but not angry or upset.  If you disagree with GCU on any decision, you can always post the card to another website.   Wink

I agree too that the explanations - as long as they are constructive and NOT opinion-based - serve to help improve the image, then I'm all ears.  Yes, I was originally one that got my back up - I've unfortunately not been able to do much card making but I did get a couple new rejections and upon second look understand the third set of eyes and their decision that the cards need additional work.  As soon as I can, I will redo them and resubmit.

Cara, is there any way you can submit your declined card into the Critique forum?  I'd be interested in seeing it and trying to understand why the reviewers declined it for their reasons stated.  It does seem a bit harsh especially if the art was created specifically as you had.  In that case, I'd be very upset too but as others have said there are other sites to post with if GCU doesn't want it.

To know specifically why is constructive, I guess I was caught off guard and felt it was rather rude.  To be able to gracefully or tactfully let someone know why I think is my point.  When it's done so bluntly and without regard to one's feelings seems cold.  Perhaps its me being too sensitive.  I would like to know some other card sites similar to greeting card universe that I can look into.  Don't get me wrong I still really like GCU, specifically a good run with them for the last 4 yrs.  Hopefully I can stay here a bit longer as well.  Donna..I will try to somehow post the card somewhere not sure where to go to put it.  They have deleted the card so its not accessable anymore but I might still have the original on my hard drive.

After re-reading your post with the reviewer's note - the first part is the "standard reply" with the reviewer's comments added at the end.  We all get that first part about the new marketability standards.  Yup, it is pretty cold if you ask me.  However, I've had some good additional comments made by the reviewers who rejected a few of my cards so at least I know what they felt was causing it to not be up to speed and I could work on it.  I did also have a card come back for edits due to choice of category which I totally disagreed with because I modeled my card after a bunch of others in that particular category.  I resubmitted without changing the category and after emailing the reviewer to please look again as the card and its sentiment were very much in line with the numerous others in the same category and the card was approved.  Have you tried emailing the reviewer back to get any additional comments?  I know Mindy said we could not argue with the reviewers, so I'd say try to get your declined card posted publicly for us all to look at via the Critique Forum.  I had the same happen with a card and I posted the image to Webshots and provided a link to it in the GCU Community "Critique Forum" along with the review's email and was able to get a lot of good suggestions to fix it (although I've been a really bad girl and not been able to complete those adjustments for resubmitting  embarrassed ).

I don't know if it's ok to post a link to another POD site or not but this is the card..Keep in mind it was mouse drawn on my computer a few years ago.  Maybe I need my eyes checked but I thought it was a pretty tree...evolving as an artist I can see where I could spruce it up, of course.  But messy, cluttered so on & so forth may not have been necessary words for them to say.  It's my tree and I'll go down fighting...lol...Opinions are like....blah blah everyone has one LOL
