Providing Credit to Other Sources
Jun 11th, 2011, 9:06am

I noticed today that many of you are using elements or images from design sources (I do too) and these sources usually require giving credit.  I do this too, but here are some things to think about.

Providing credit in the Image By is not a great idea.  First of all it gives the appearance of providing a link because this is an active link text, which some of them suggest as a way to provide credit...however this not only does not link to them, it does not stay with the card when printed which is critical.

What I suggest you do is that you ALWAYS add a Photo Courtesy of.... in very small print somewhere on the actual image (don't use .com, just the name of the person or site).  Then also put this same statement at the end of your Artist's Note section.  This method makes sure that if the copyright holder of that image ever sees it in printed form, they see proper credit and if they find it on the site, they see the credit given in your artist's notes.

Here's an example of one of mine.  You can't read the credits on the large view, but can full-size (when printed) credits on this card are on the side of the tent and again in my artist notes.

Just food for thought!  Grin

I was wondering about this and haven't used any designs or artwork other than my own because I wasn't sure how to give proper credit. Thank you  Smiley

I tried that once with a Dover vintage image of a mermaid and was told to remove the credit, so I just deleted the card.

Well, I provide this credit all the time and the only time I was told to remove it was because I used the .com, that being the site I took the image from.  When I resubmitted with JoesGraphics vs JoesGraphics.com it flew through and has ever since.  So, could this have been what happened?  I'd love to know exactly what you put on the card as well as where and how big it was because I find it interesting that you were asked to remove it unless it was a web address which is not allowed or too obtrusive on the design.

Willing to provide more input on your experience?

Yes, we like that suggestion Doreen with emphasis on keeping the design priority #1.  We've seen credit on some images that is very distracting (too big, too bold, standout color, etc.).

We do not allow ".com" on the image, in the "image by" field nor in the Artist's Notes field as you have mentioned.
