in a slump
May 17th, 2011, 6:45pm

Does anyone have suggestions on how I can increase traffic to my store?  I've got "artist block" right now haven't created any new cards in a few weeks.  I'm getting kind of disappointed in not having very many sales.  Do I need to add many more cards and/or revise the ones i have.   Your suggestions are much appreciated.  I see so much talent on here , so many wonderful cards out there. Lots of competition.    Smiley

Thank you,  Jeannette

I like your store, you have a real talent!  Don't be discouraged, I know that you'll get sales.  It takes time.  Keep adding, promoting, and it will happen.

You've got a very neat style, don't give up!  We all have to start somewhere!

Hi Jeannette,

I was just asked by a wonderful GCU artist to put together a list for her blog, there may be something helpful there for you.  One of the best things you can do is not to let your store go stagnant, in other words letting an online store site for weeks with no new activity on your part, lowers your ranking in search engines.

Hi, Jeannette!

Your cards are really cute and funny...you just need more of them!  Lots more!  You have to keep in mind that there are over 400,000 cards in The Universe.

Here's a suggestion:  Use your Apple Martini Lady card to create age and relationship specific cards by changing the text to something like, "Now that you're 21, I've got some advice for you..."  You can use the same image and cover text as long as you change the age, so you can make as many ages as you have the ambition for!  You could also use that same image to create cards for specific relationships like, sister or cousin.  I've noticed that you have used some of your images this way, I would suggest that you keep going.  Sometimes playing with an older, or existing, design will spark some creativity to use it differently, or make something entirely new.

The number 1 best piece of advice I can give you is to not give up!  Keep making cards.  I always say of GCU, it is the ultimate "If you build it, they will come" site.  Smiley

Good luck!

Hi Jeannette,

You have cute and creative cards at your store.  To help the artist block, I always look at cards in the retail stores, not to copy but it does get my juices flowing and gives me ideas.   Also Tom recently advertised on Facebook and he seemed to think it at least gave him exposure, he has a forum discussion about his results.   Keep designing and your sales will come.   Rosie Cards

You have adorable characters for your cards and they made me smile!  I hear over and over again that it takes the internet a few months to pick up on items - don't know if that's accurate, but it did seem so for my web sites.  It took awhile for my Zazzle store to show an real uptick in visitors and sales, and GCU the same.

DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED!  Yes, the competition is fierce, but it is friendly and the artists here will always give you aid and comfort.  As people find you, they will buy and they will return.

Keep up the good work; keep making cards.  Don't be afraid to approach local stores with your cards - the worst that can happen is they'll say "No thanks", but sometimes they're delighted to showcase work by a local artist.  Facebook, MySpace, and Squidoo never seemed to do much for me, but others have said they notice more traffic.  Try everything - you can always stop if the time isn't worth it, but you could gain a lot.

Wishing you a lot of success,

Carol

Jeanette,
You have a unique style that sets you apart from everyone else---and that's good! You want to be different to attract the customers. Don't get discouraged! It takes time to get noticed.

A couple of suggestions: you might try to re-design your header, just to give a fresh look to your page. Sometimes changing the page's colors gives a boost also to the look of your cards. Another suggestion: put at least 10 of your best cards at the top of the page in the featured section. That will showcase your best work.

And just be patient. It's taken me 2 yrs. to get where I am in sales. I was discouraged too. Keep adding new cards all of the time. It may be hard, but this keeps your creativity active. I hope some of this helps. We've all gone through this and you just have to hang in there.

Hello Jeannette,

Yes, you're cards are great and love your characters.  With only 65 cards you will make some sales every now and then, but need many more and like suggested in a previous response to your thread, recycle some of the ones you now have.

Maybe someone mentioned this and I missed it, but when I opened the first page in your gallery, the first thing that hit me were Christmas cards.  Those should be near to the last page in your gallery right now and up front should be fathers day and the regular things like birthday, romance etc.  I really don't think that many people really shop the stores by themselves unless you do have a following from promoting on facebook and other social sites, but for the ones that do, you want cards that are most relevent to upcoming holidays.

Also use your featured gallery to showcase your different characters and styles with a variety of categories so people can see an example of each right away without having to scroll through page after page.  with 65 cards that's not much of an issue, but we're going to see 20 or 30 new ones up in the next few weeks with these suggestions from everyone and before long you'll have several hundred cards or more.  Grin Grin Grin
Keeping your gallery organized now while you have a few cards will only help you down the road when you have hundreds to manage.

Keep making these great characters and we'll see you with many more sales.

Best always, Randy

Hi Jeannette,

I think you have a nice store started also, some nice designs!

As others have said you can not let you store sit to long without adding new content even a new card a day or a couple a week will keep it active. Also, the spring quarter is usually the slowest quarter (at least for me)... just keep adding cards. Smiley

Good luck Smiley,

Bill

Jeanette,

Another great way to promote your cards and make yourself feel better and inspired is to order some of your own cards and send them out to friends and family. I did that with my mother-in-law, and now her friend wants to order a whole bunch of them. Spread out to the real world where people can see your wonderful cards in person. GCU does such a great printing job. That alone will get your juices flowing. And roam the card aisle in any store you're in as previously suggested (I have a great grocery store with amazing cards that I never pass up to browse). Even the Post Office has a great display of cards to look at to break the boredom of waiting on line.
We all have blocks... this to shall pass. Be encouraged and inspired by others, not discouraged! This is one of the best forums you can come to for support!

Best to you!
Laura

Hi Jeanette, not sure I've got any extra advice to add but just wanted to say how great I think your cards are.  You're clearly very talented and I'm sure in time your sales will pick up  Smiley

Hi Jeannette,

One of the things I like to do is play with colours and patterns. I do this to get inspired. It's a random way to allow colours to inspire you. I do this at colourlovers.com (http://www.colourlovers.com/lover/MoonDreams). I also take inspiration from the great artists out there (paintings, sculpture, architecture).

If I'm in a slump, I'll also try reading a book. One that forces your mind to create these wild, imaginative worlds. William Shakespeare, Jules Verne, Edgar Rice Burroughs, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Elizabeth Gaskell and Lucy Laud Montgomery are some of my favourites. Their language is so descriptive, my mind just paints these pictures.

Music also inspires me. Every time I listen to a song, my mind plays this "film" to it. I see people, places, actions, all of it. Any one of these things can get me back into designing.

Hope this helps,

Jannina

I find sometimes that when I'm in a slump that taking my drawing pad/laptop/computer/whatever and going to another location sometimes help.

Also, when I'm not feeling particularly creative I find that that's usually good time to do some house keeping (checking keywords, rearranging cards, etc.)

Good luck!

Hi Jeannette- you have gotten some really good advice from great GCU artists-

If your in a slump - what about going back to basics - what is happening in your life right now - a sick friend, a graduation, a wedding, what about creating a card for someone who is in an inspirational slump?????

As Randy stated, you need more cards- simply do the math - 72 cards out of over 400, 000 - it is not even 1 % of the cards available on GCU, let alone other sites.  Good luck - you can do it !!!!!! Smiley
