My Paint Free Download...
Apr 30th, 2011, 10:07am

I just finished my first masterpiece working with a free download program called My Paint.  Well not sure if a masterpiece, I probably worked a couple of hours on this experimenting with the different brushes and mediums and this is what I came up with.  I'm not a trained artist and never have taken any painting or drawing classes, just a photographer and a doodler, so what do you think?  Any art teachers or experienced artists who can offer some constructive critism would be appreciated.  Be tough, I don't have a fragile ego!  Any ideas for a card or category too.

Thanks guys!

Best always, Randy

Randall, I have been trying for several minutes to view your masterpiece, but so far it goes to the page and nothing shows up. But I am sure if it is anything at all like your other work it is very, very, good.

Your painting is beautiful!  I'd be happy to throw out all of my paints and pencils and just go digital if I could figure out how to do it so that I could achieve results like yours.

How do you download My Paint? I saw a number of sites offering this freeware, but was wary of viruses.

I was just pondering that question, Catherine. When in doubt, always use cnet:

That's a wonderful new tool for you, Randall. Good job! The composition is really nice. To think that you drew it with the mouse is phenomenal. I don't think you'd have any better control with a Wacom. I have one, but keep going back to my mouse for better control and speed. I only use my Wacom when I need to draw fine tail hairs on my squirrels for my "Mr. Snoofles" series.

As a trained artist, perhaps I can offer a few suggestions.
Your drawing needs a bit more contrast. To make objects stand out, I use these simple rules of juxtaposition:
1) Use cool colors against warm colors
2) Put sharply defined objects against soft or blurred objects and backgrounds.
3) Contrast dark against light.

For your particular painting, I'd suggest creating contrast between trees. Perhaps shade the area at the base of the trees to make it darker. Make the topmost leaves lighter.
Create a gradiant of deeper blue at the top of the sky and resolve to the same lightness you currently have at the mountain peaks.
The mountains are shaped beautifully, but they need more texture and contrast within them. The color is nice, though!
As you have no doubt observed, mountains look blue or purple the further away they are. Have you thought of adding a distant mountain range beyond what you aleady have? It would look nice with a blurred, lavender hint of more mountains.
Another idea: How about a more distinct focal point? Something like an old dead branch, or perhaps a  patch of light within the trees to draw the eye to a specific point.
Just some ideas.
Good luck with your new Paint box and have fun!
Ramelle

Thank you everyone for your kind remarks and Ramelle for your suggestions.   I wasn't around all day as I had a car show this morning and then dirt track car races to shoot in the afternoon through evening.  Just got in from the races here in the wee hours of the morning, but can't wait to try some of those tips.  I'm really surpised about being able to have better control with a mouse over a tablet.  Very interesting, thought it'd be the other way around!
Thank you again for all your comments!
Best always, Randy

I go by my 'first impression' when it comes to art.  I have to say, I find it was a good one.  It made me want to look longer.  It's really very nice.  Speaks to me.
