Anyone use FineArtAmerica?
Mar 11th, 2011, 6:51am

I uploaded a few things at Fineartamerica this week and wondered if anyone here has experience with them?

Talk about coincidences -- I was just looking at this site last night!  Awhile ago, I won a print in a contest from this artist:  http://www.markregni.com/   It's Moonlit Cabin, 3rd from the bottom in the center.  I received it in a heavy cardboard tube in perfect condition.  It's beautiful!

While I don't have experience as an artist submitting to the site, I can tell you that the end product the customer receives is high quality.

I have been with Fine Art America for about three years and I personally give them high marks. You can upload your work for free and you can also have a premium membership of which I do have. That is $60.00 a year and you basically get your own store with NO advertising and no links to other peoples work. It's your own site with your own web address. I love the layout of the premium FineArtAmerica site

They are constantly trying new things that are geared towards helping the artist sell their work.

I have incorporated FineArtAmerica, GreetingCardUniverse and Etsy into my personal website hosted by wix.com. it is ... http://www.kennethkrolikowski.com ...  It will give you a chance to see what a nice, clean layout FAA offers.

I average roughly 2-3 sales per month equally divided between prints and framed prints.

I don't think FineArtAmerica is widely known but I am glad I discovered them....Ken

Kenneth thank you for the information. You have a beautiful website.  It sounds like I will stay on fineartamerica and see if I sell anything. It appears to be a good website for me. I will be looking you up in FAA to view all of your works.

Hi Kenneth...

Very nice internet presence.  I enjoyed my visit very much.  I would like to suggest one thing however, particularly on your Greeting Card Page, if you can, there should be more obvious links to get to your store.  I clicked all over that page before I really noticed the Open Sign. I have found that keeping my links clear, concise and in the same location from page to page has increased my sales who visit my Home Site and Newsletter.  Just food for thought.  Loved your site!

HI Kenneth,
Your website is great and I love your images.  How long did it take you to get traffic to your Fine Art America site?  And how is Etsy working for you?  Do you try to keep your print prices the same on all the sites?  I just started adding my photography to Etsy and I have a Redbubble site plus I sell in a couple of local stores.  The hardest thing for me is pricing especially in the stores where the commission is different.  I like how you incorporated everything on your website.

Hi Susan...I too look forward to hearing Kenneth's response, sorry for chiming in but I've sold prints (many of them limited editions) for 20-years now, both online in various places, in galleries, stores and outdoor events.  The best advice I was given many years ago was that the markup on your prints should be 50%.  That way you make a little more from sales with only 30% commission and still make a normal projected fee for those with 50%.

It really is quite important to keep your print prices the same from one place to another whenever possible.  A 50% markup allows you to do that.  And before anyone gasps...50% markup is a normal percentage for almost all non-essential goods in the U.S.  That's why stores can have 50% off sales, they can reduce their inventory and still get what they paid for the product.

Just my 2-cents.

Just to clarify on Doreen's post ... in retail stores it is considered a 100% markup - they buy wholesale at $4.00 and price it at $8.00 ... they've added 100% of the original price to the original price ... a 100% markup ...

First of all, thank you very much to all who have visited my site and have seen how I incorporate Fine Art America into it. And Doreen, you are right, the link to my CGU store can be more user friendly. Thanks for the input.

As far as traffic to my FAA site, views began almost immediately. I have had 5 sales on Etsy in my first month and am really excited about the possibilities there. I will weed out images that don't get much response and then add more of what people are viewing and buying. I have some stuff on RedBubble but I must admit I have pretty much abandoned them since I discovered FineArtAmerica.

I have been very successful selling my work in a local store and I believe a main reason is because I keep my prices reasonable. Sure it also may be because my work may be appealing to buyers and when that's the case I really don't believe in jacking up prices when demand is high. Customer will stop buying at a certain point and they will remember you for that. Especially in a business which has returning customers familiar with you. I probably am reasonable to a fault at times but it keeps local customers coming back. Both online and real store prices are very similar.

Prints are easy to markup. Matted prints and framed pieces a little more difficult due to labor time involved.

This has been a very helpful thread.  Doreen when you sold limited editions, how many in an edition? Did you have editions for each size?  How did you choose the images?  If you sell images as limit editions did you still sell the images as loose prints or posters?  Sorry I'm going on about this...
I guess my pricing is some where between yours and Kenneth's.  I sell my small loose prints at a lower price but I have a higher mark up on my matted and framed pieces.  I add in my time into the equation.     Doreen,  your information on the pricing seems right on...I have been pricing my stuff based on a 50% store commission even through the stores I'm in have commissions ranging from 25% to 50%.  I  sale more of my big pieces in the store that has the higher commission because she is in a better location so I guess it all evens out in the end.
Doreen, you also have a really nice store with a lot of great cards.  I'm sure you do very well.
Thank you for all your help everyone.

Hi Susan,

First of all I never sold my prints matted.  I had a close friend who owned a framing shop and she told me that 9 out of 10 people who get their purchased print framed, have her remove the print from the matting and choose matting that goes with their home and the frame they chose.  So I put my prints on archival foam core, attached with large archival photo corners.  Added a Certificate of Authenticity and sold them in resealable clear envelopes.  When you sell matted prints, the biggest issue is that when you take them from art show to art show or have them in a retail environment where people look through them, the corners of the matting get dinged up...then those prints don't sell until you re-mat them.

As far as editions go, mine are all Giclee prints.  So my editions were usually 100, 250 or 500.  Limited editions are assigned by size.  So I had for example an edition of 250 12x15 size and of the same image, I'd have a 24x36 canvas edition of 50.  I also had Open Editions which are signed but not numbered and those were non-archival prints.

There is much to learn about stepping out into the world of selling prints in the real world vs online.  I stopped that several years ago.  I hate the inventory and even though I sell very well, I tired of lugging them around, stocking them and of course storing them.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions.  Grin
