The Changing Perception of  "Easter"
Mar 4th, 2011, 1:29pm

Hi,
This is a topic I have never seen on the Forum yet, so I thought I'd toss some ideas around to see what other people may think of this.
Today, I had an Easter card returned because I did not specifically use the word "Easter" in the inside text. After amending my text as requested, I wrote a letter to the reviewer about the changing perception of the word "Easter".
I don't want to come across as a religious nut, but I do feel strongly about this subject.
Here's some of what I wrote to my reviewer:

                                                              ********
May I introduce a new idea to GCU?
I deliberately omitted the word "Easter" on this particular card in order to give an alternative "Resurrection Sunday" greeting to those in the Christian and Messianic Jewish communities who find the word "Easter" to be offensive. As the wife of a Messianic (Jewish-Christian) Rabbi, I can assure you that I am not alone in my opinion.
Gradually, more and more Christians are becoming aware of the pagan roots of the word. Messianic Jews (those who believe that Jesus is the Messiah) have known all along that the word easter originates from the Babylonian goddess Ishtar, also known as Astartes, and referred to in the Bible as the Ashtoreth.
Ashtoreth worship is strictly censured in the Bible, so it is unfortunate that the day upon which we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus has been referred to by a pagan name.
Many of those in the Messianic and Christian communities are making efforts to drop the word "easter" from their vocabulary and adopt the term "Resurrection Sunday" instead.
This is a new concept to most people, but like anything new, it has to start somewhere.
Would GCU consider adding a new category within Holidays>> Easter to accommodate this changing perception of Easter? Many people would applaud you for the much-needed change!
Thanks for your time and consideration,
Ramelle Richardson

Ramelle,
Very well written.  I'm sure the Administrators will respond in a positive way!

I totally agree. It does seem that the reviewers, however, have a very limited understanding of many things Christian. I once had a Christmas card declined because it didn't say "Christmas" on it--though it DID include the Scripture which says, "For unto us a child is born"! I just changed the inside to say "Merry Christmas" and it went through.

Ramelle,

I love your suggestion to GCU re's "Ressurection..." and it's an excellent new category for Easter and GCU!  FYI - Been with GCU for years (began in the early days, quit/canceled my account and rejoined) and I've yet to ask for a new category and be denied - they're amenable to new ideas.  Good luck and I'm happy you posted.

Hi Ramelle,

I'm with you on this one! Thank you for your well explanation to the GCU Admin. of the use of the term Resurection Sunday over Easter. You/we may not change the world, but it would at least be nice if some more Christian catagories were available.

Blessings,
Lyn

I agree with you one hundred percent.  Many times when I have written a greeting for this holiday
I have changed it to "Ressurection Sunday".

Thanks, Sharon
