the word Marine???
Jan 28th, 2011, 4:07am

Are we not allowed to use the word"Marine" anymore???.. I just had cards sent back for edits and or approved with edits . The reviewer said I can not use the word Marine???... I thought and just read again the we can use the singular version of "Marine".

I spent several hours sometime back changing my keywords to comply to this rule and now this chap says I can't use the word Marine... can I get some clarification on this please?

Thanks,
Bill

Does seem strange, as I always though marine meant anything related to the sea, so I looked it up

1.
a. Of or relating to the sea: marine exploration.
b. Native to, inhabiting, or formed by the sea: marine animals.
2. Of or relating to shipping or maritime affairs.
3. Of or relating to sea navigation; nautical: a marine chart. See Synonyms at nautical.
4. Of or relating to troops that serve at sea as well as on land, specifically the U.S. Marine Corps.
n.
1.
a. A soldier serving on a ship or at a naval installation.
b. Marine A member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
2. The mercantile or naval ships or shipping fleet of a country.
3. The governmental department in charge of naval affairs in some nations.

As you can see it is only one interpretation that it is a US soldier which is why I assume the word is 'not allowed' maybe the troops in America has copyrighted the word. and that would be US Marine Corps surely?
4. A painting or photograph of the sea.

Oh dear we went through this one a while back,
I contacted the Marines

YES.... you can use the word marine because the USA Marine's don't own the name,
what you can't do is refer to their logos sayings etc.

They cant copywrite the word Marine because it came from the days
when boats were first invented.

There is to much confusion of the actual Marine word and the Marine' usa guy told me:

Correctly stated Tanya, there are multiple "Marine" organizations in the world, if a card was created that said "I love my Marine" and it incorporated USMC branding such as our color pallet and words like "Semper Fi" then it would clearly be marketed as a U.S. Marine Corps product. Licensing would be required in this case.

We require licensing based on context in this case.... so stay away from the colours, but put the word Marine in whatever, stay away from Sampa Fi or whatever and no usa flag.

Its the words USMC branding, colour palate, Sempre Fi that makes it copywrite not the word marine.
Tongue lol this one always gets me.

And for the reviewers:

Shes the one I wrote to.

Shocked Shocked Oh no i was flirting with a girl, I thaught she was a he, shame on me lol

Thanks for the response.. I just read the e-mail from Mindy TWICE and it clearly states that we CAN use the word"Marine"... I wish so mush that these reviewers would have to go by the "Rules" that have been put down.. it seems so many times that they go by their own thoughts.. or guess!

I spent several hours last year changing all my "Patriotic "cards to comply to this and now I have this guy telling me I can't.. not half my new cards are in limbo because of this!!! Sad

I think that this once again illustrates what i was talking about in regard to the Alice In WOnderland discussion a week or so ago.
It seems that even the reviewers may not be sure of the policies (and even the law) and so instead of referring to their own rules, getting a second opinion, or being proactive and doing the research YOU took the time to do, they just say "No."

GCU has a right to protect themselves but these incidents make the review results & rules seem very arbitrary. It's kind of disappointing.

I'm guessing here, but if it were my situation I'd take into consideration...

That unlike a normal office environment, I'm guessing our reviewers work solo and from their own home.  So they don't have the benefit of 'discussing' things every time they question the 1000 rules floating around in their head.  My experience has been that on the rare occasion I think a reviewer may be in the wrong, I simply explain myself in an email back to them and get immediate response.  Either, the issue is fixed or we have a discussion via email and compromise.

Inconsistencies are going to happen, they are human.  Just email the reviewer with a link to the previous discussion on using the word Marine but not Marines and ask them if that has changed.

I'm not a reviewer, but I sure feel for them  Grin

You are correct William.  Please reply with a/the product id# in question so I can take a peek.  This will allow me to address w/ the specific reviewer.  I've asked our review team to take any needed action on your cards and have referenced the related post on Marines.

Our team does have a guide, that grows daily, of guidelines, rules, limitations, magic spells, etc.  It can be a bit daunting.  I think Doreen hit the nail on the head and shared an excellent suggestion.  In any case please accept my apologies for the error and many thanks for the tedious work you did earlier paring your terms down to Marine.

Thanks Mindy!

I did reply to a couple of the cards that the reviewer had in question. Sorry for seeming a bit frustrated here and I do understand that the reviewers are swamped and may miss some things or not be sure about some things.... but something like this with such a history of questions behind it surprised me...

There are still some cards that have not been reviewed yet so there may be a few in that bunch also. Here are the card numbers:
753702
753708
753838
753835
753840

Thanks again for a response to this from all of you and thanks Mindy for your help Smiley,
Bill
