Wondering about "people" cards
Dec 23rd, 2010, 5:27am

Hello all, I have been a contributing artist here for about two years. I have had a few sales.
Just wondering, lately I have seen a lot of what I call "people" cards. Cute or humourous cards with pictures of people on them.

The first two cards I submitted were people cards. One was of a little girl laughing, It was a congratulations card in pink, that said, "I'm tickled pink". The other was of a little girl with her hand over her mouth and a startled look on her face. It said "OOPS I missed your birthday".

The reviewer approved the cards for private gallery only, saying, there would be limited market because no one would buy a card with an unknown child on it.

I have a lot of vintgage pictures that would make great comical greeting cards. One of two of my husband's uncles wearing a tie with overalls. Has the policy changed about people cards? Can I use people images now?

Hi Sandra,

You should check out the “GCU Wiki” link at the top of the page for what is and is not allowed. Every county differs slightly on how you can use people’s images and the law is always changing, so I only use images of paid models or very close family who will sign a model release form.

I do have a model release for the two images I used, and I stated the same in the reviewers note. They are my granddaughters and the father and mother have signed a model release. The picture of the two uncles that I mentioned, I have permission to use from the daughters of the uncles. The picture  of the uncles belonged to my husband's deceased mother.

Thanks, I will review the link you mentioned.

There appears to be different rules, different strokes for different folks.  I uploaded a very cute card with my son's picture with his puppy.  The card was rejected - no child pictures allowed.  A couple of months later there was a featured card on the GGU home page with a very cute picture of a little girl.  That card was in the public domain.  I also have some category selections rejected even though they fit the card perfectly.  I used to challenge decisions, but it does no good.  I am thankful for a web site to place my art and I just have decided to take the good with the bad.

Some people will judge an image in deferent ways with one saying it is sexy and another saying that it is porn, even more so for children and for everyone on here I think that it is a good thing that GCU fall on the side of caution.

"People" cards are fine however we do leave it to the reviewers' discretion how marketable the image is.
If they feel it is a home snapshot that will result in a poor quality finished product then it may be decline or approved only for your Private gallery.  This is particularly true when there are distracting or unsavory elements in the background as well as if the image is poorly suited for the occasion.  It is subjective.

For example you may receive this response in the card review comments:
This image will not translate well in print as a greeting card. The composition and photograph will not produce a quality greeting card. Photographs of household items in general do not translate well into paper greeting cards. Notice the distracting background elements like walls, blankets, pillows, shadows that give this image an unprofessional look.

Of course the model release or permission for their image to be used in this manner is required and reviewers often ask for this especially if the photo is of a child.  We appreciate your understanding when we ask for this.

Hope that sheds some light on the subject.  Please let us know if you have additional questions.
