I don't think it's as much the sale but rather the 10% commission that has people upset.

Yes, you're right about this Tanya.

Well, if we look at the commission table, we can see that 10% is what we all signed on for...

Artist Commissions Table

Price Range of Cards      Artist Commission Percentage
$2.29 - $2.79      20%
$1.89 - $2.28      15%
$1.70 - $1.88      12%
$0.50 - $1.69      10%

Note: The artist discount code will calculate your own card purchases at $1.89 a card for up to 99 cards. At that price your artist fees are 15% (28 cents) so effectively your card price is $1.61.

So, I've been thinking a lot about this subject, and, I have to say, again, I'm pretty disappointed by the Black Friday sale, and now I'm wondering what is planned for Cyber Monday?

And another thing, while I'm at it, regarding Black Friday sales at traditional brick and mortar stores, and forgive me if someone else already said this, but...

In a traditional store, there is existing merchandise, already paid for by the store.  Black Friday sales are meant to clear out what is existing, to reduce inventory and to put some money toward the bottom line, to get out of "the red" and "into the black."  The vendor (supplier) already has been paid, the shipper has already been paid.  In our situation here, there are no products just collecting dust on the shelves, no suppliers or shippers, just us, the artists who ONLY get paid when someone buys OUR designs.

I've said this before in the forum, have been reminded by other artists that we are licensing our work to GCU, which is correct, but I do want to say this again:

To me, it doesn't feel good to be treated like the artists are not part of the team.  To keep a big sale from us like this is wrong.  And then to expect that we will be happy with a 10% commission on top of that?

Believe it or not, some of us take pride in our work, we really work hard to make a statement with our designs, we want to give customers, ours and GCU's, a wonderful product, one that we are proud to present to the customers, one that the giver is proud to give and that the recipient is pleased to receive.  Selling one card and earning 14-cents for the effort is really quite disappointing, and I have to say, even insulting.

I'm not expecting that there will be any "correction" in the commission, because we did agree to this amount when we signed up, but, I really hope that GCU will take the artists into consideration before a big sale in the future.

Thanks for reading!

Today is Saturday, the day after the black Friday sale, and I just got a sale notification where I sold 2 cards both for 14 cents.  The total cards purchased was 8.  The sale is over and customers are still able to use this sale code.  That just is not right.  I didn't complain about the low commission yesterday, but to be getting it again today is a bit too much. Sad

Edited to add Sale came in at 5:39 p.m. Central Time on 11/27.

I too had some sales today the 27th of November and one of them reflects a .14cent per attached.
Just reporting it here for the bookkeepers records adjustment and also in case it needed adjustment on the site sales code since it was 6:28 p.m. EST tonight when that one happened.. Roll Eyes   Thanks

That is interesting Lj and Kathy...definitely should be adjusted by GCU.  My sales dated 11/27 show the .56 so this must indeed be corrected for anyone who was allowed to use the code after the sale ended.

I do think GCU should give us 15 percent of the sales for Black Friday, especially because no one was told about the drastic sale.

What you say, Penny, is exactly what I was thinking. . . also in a "brick 'n' mortar" Black Friday sale the sales clerks aren't paid less on that day either.  Sales like this ARE to help the company's bottom line, but we as individual artists, running our own businesses have a bottom line too!  It's a slap in the face!  On other sites when a sale happens the creator still gets the same percentage . . . granted it's of a lower sale price, but the commission percentage does not go down.  We're getting "double dinged" while GCU is in a way "double dipping."
Come on GCU, you're better than that!   'e'

Hi, again!

Just wanted to mention that I, too, had a sale today for cards (2) at $1.39 each.  There were a total of 8 cards on this order, maybe Kathy's and LJ's?  My sales notification, see below:

Mail Date: November 29, 2010

Ordered From: QLD, Australia

Price: $1.39

Total Quantity:      2
Total Price:      $2.78

All Items
Total Order Quantity:      8
Total Order Price:      $11.12
Price per Card Paid:      $1.39

Artist Commissions:      $0.28       (10% - $0.14 per card)
Seller Commissions:      $0.00
Total Commissions:      $0.28

Discounts Applied:
$1.39 for each greeting card

I did have other sales today, which were at the regular commission rate, so it looks like the promo code is/was still working for the Black Friday sale.

*** Additional info:  Yes, the code is still working, I just tried it by adding a card to my cart and typing in the promo code, and it worked perfectly, dropped the price right down to $1.39.  I didn't complete the order.  I'm sure that there is a way to make these codes expire at a specific time, isn't there?

Thanks for reading.

I've got cards sales dated 26th, 27th and 28th that all use the black friday sale code and I got 10% commission.    Shocked

The black friday one day sale became a three day sale!    Angry
