This is not very exciting, is it? It  would appear that GCU have decided that every card sale today is treated as it were part of a bulk mixed order of more than 1,000 cards. The artist's commission on that type of sale is 10%, ergo 0.14 cents on a single card.

On an international note, 'Black Friday' has a totally different meaning in other parts of the world. In Australia, it is used in media especially for the 13th day of a month when that day falls on a Friday. Therefore, marking a sale 'Black Friday' just causes confusion. It does not make sense outside of the USA, I suspect.

Cheers,

You know, I had thought about purchasing some of my own cards and one other artist's today, about $55.00 worth altogether, to take advantage of this sale. Now, knowing that it helps GCU earn more and the artist that I was going to buy from earn less, I don't think I will. I am supporting what I think is not fair if I do, so I will miss this one, I guess.  Sad

I made some sales today, too. Although I am happy for them, I have to admit that 14 cents does seem very low.

I must agree!

Black Friday is named so that stores are in the Black for the year instead of ending the year in the Red.  In the case of GCU its very sad that they take that out of our measly commission.

At the very least, I would like GCU to consider making these huge sales available only on the cards that fit the holiday for which the sale is geared to...in this case Christmas cards.  I could live with that.

I, like so many others, sold cards today for my little .14 a piece and none of them were Christmas cards.

Hi Doreen,

Thanks for the explanation of Black Friday as used in the USA - very different from our interpretation! I agree that a limited range of categories should be available for these sorts of sales, not carte blanche.

Fourteen cents commission is too low, as you've all pointed out. We should at least split the discount with GCU.  That said, I did buy some of my cards I had planned to buy for Christmas and had them sent directly, because the price is lower than with our artist discount.  The effective rate is $1.25 each with your fourteen cent commission.  The trouble is that buyers may plan on this sale in the future and wait to get this sale, so we're all stuck with the lower commission... On the other hand, it may jump start people into the idea of buying more cards online.  Grin

this is a great deal once in a while for customers, so they come back for more.. HOWEVER I really think GCU should let us know prior to when we sign up that this type of Specials for customers will come up occasionally.. I didnt see anything like this when I agreed to participate..  don't like last minute surprises. In my  opinion..This is a tad bit unfair ...I think we should be notified and asked if WE want to participate in this 10% stuff. Maybe some shops don't want to.. Maybe some would.

Thanks for bringing this up, Norma.

I was surprised by the 10% commission, too.  I did buy my own Christmas cards to send out this year, at the sale price, but when I factored in the shipping, I probably would have saved money by waiting for a free shipping promo and using the artist discount code and getting the standard commission on the sale.

But, on the bright side, I'm sure that we've all dazzled the customers with our brilliant designs, and feeling guilty for getting such a bargain this time, they will be thrilled to pay full price next time...and buy tons more cards!  Wink

I just wanted to add to what Doreen had mentioned:  Of the cards that I sold today, excepting the Christmas cards that I bought, only 2 were Christmas cards, 15 were wedding related.

Thanks!

just piping in with my own 2cents ...

I am on board with super deep discounts on rare occasions (like Black Friday, USA style).  And while I completely understand that a POD program is very different from a Retail program, I have to draw a parallel (this time).  In the Retail world, the Suppliers are still getting full price (or in many instances THEIR sale price) on material the Stores are purchasing for Holiday stock.  I would love to see AT THE VERY LEAST - an more even 50/50 split with GCU (yes, I know it isn't really 50/50 on profits - but I'm not up for doing the math - I'd like the discount to be split 50/50, instead of the way it was today).

I have no problem with folks purchasing cards for ANY occasion on a day like today, tho.

So - Kudos to GCU for going for the Black Friday deep discount hook
Shame on GCU for not letting us know that our cut was so drastic

2 cents, from me!

Thanks for the reply Shaun. Glad to see that a GCU staff member has been reading this thread and hopefully on Monday some sort of adjustment can be made to be more fair to artists.

Thanks Shaun..this is good to know.

I had 6 sales today, sold a dozen cards, one to Japan, which was nice. (Ive never had 6 orders in a day, a week maybe, but not a day..so...) I still did my advertising..even a bit more than normal, I was taking advantage of people taking advantage of Black Friday Sales.
Anyway, maybe we will earn a bit more after all.
Or possibly a nice bonus at the end of the year...TeeHee! Okay maybe that`s hoping for too much.. Roll Eyes

i loved the sale

I loved this sale because it gave me the opportunity to purchase more of our own cards at a reduced rate.
While we sold a few cards to others , I did purchase many more of our cards.

This sale was a great opportunity to purchase your own cards at a reduced rate.
and sales made were opportunities to be seen.
