Accent marks possible in copy?
Feb 26th, 2010, 8:17am

I am working on a card in French and need to add an accent mark. Are they available to use and if so,
how to you access them?

Thanks.

Hi Gina,

Not all fonts have characters with the various accent marks, however, most do. If you are using Windows, there is a little program called Character Map installed as part of Windows. You will find it in All Programs > Accessories > System Tools. Find the character that yoiu want to use there, then copy it and paste in the appropriate place. Check the inner verse (that is I am assuming where you want to use the character) on screen before you finally finish the card. If it looks right on that screen, then it will look right on the card.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Rosanne

Thanks for your help Roseanne. Did a copy and paste for the accent mark, but if
GCU has a foreign language category, they really should offer accent marks on the site itself, so
we didn't have to do that. Thanks again.

I totally agree with Gina!
I have a similar problem with, for example, Slovenian letters č, š and ž.

Seems to me that since the GCU site IS an American English site that the characters and spell check would be in American English.  I don't think it should be up to the site to provide every character for every language.  Is it really that difficult to copy and paste to get the correct accents from the copy you've written on your own computer as Roseanne suggested?

Problem is that I don't think the copy and paste function for accent marks works in all the
fonts. I tried it in one and it didn't work, so had to use another typeface. I guess it's not that big of a deal, but, it takes more time that way--time you could be devoting to creating another card.

That is correct, Gina. It doesn't work for all fonts because not all fonts have the accented characters. These characters are created at the discretion of the person designing the font and this is something that GCU has no control over. GCU did not develop these fonts. There are plenty of pretty fonts out there with no accented characters, more's the pity!  Smiley

The only thing I can suggest is that if you intend to make many cards with the accented characters, do a good trawl through the fonts at GCU, identify the ones that work for you and continue to use only those.

Cheers,

I wish there were a few more fonts available in creating cards here at GCU, as I use
OpenOffice (not Word) in creating the face of my cards and some of the fonts I can use on GCU are not available to me in OpenOffice. No big deal, I guess, but it does limit the fonts I can use and
thus, the less creative I can be.

Hi if you google ASCII it will give you all the characters to use. I write mostly Spanish cards and don't have a problem using accents! You really have to do you your research with ASCII and learn them by memory. Hope this helps!

Hi Gina,
Try this site.  http://www.starr.net/is/type/altnum.htm
These Alts work great for me.
Good luck!
