Same Image Barrage
Nov 13th, 2009, 5:25am

I have had some new cards approved over the last few days.  When I visit the New Cards link on the homepage I am barraged by 15 of what appears to be the same card.  Page two- almost the same.  Page 6, 16 of the same image.  Page 7, 12 of the same and 8 of another.  Page 9, 17 images the same.  Page 10, 12 images the same.  Page 12, 13 images the same.  Page 14, 21 images the same and on and on.

My concern is that if a customer goes to the New Cards link on the homepage and is assaulted by, seemingly, the very same images they will leave thinking there is no use to look farther if there are so many cards with mostly the same image.

Is it possible to limit cards with the same image, and only wording changes, for the sake of keeping customers interested in staying on the site?

Hi Smiley

It's been discussed many times before but I don't think it's high on the to do list Smiley

Too bad.... I know of some of my friends that have been put off by that feature and just 'tuned out.'    I, myself, won't dally on a page with the same image.

yes, I hate to stir the pot but honestly this should be an issue that's a little higher on the ladder, especially with all the holiday sales now. I have suggested in the past that rather than showing all of those type of cards why can there not be some kind of bolded text below the image that says it is offered as personalized for family or names...
that way some of the other artists get better exposure and if it's bolded and noticeable then the artist with personalized same card design gets the message out there that is is personalized.  Or do the same and show only 2 or 3 of the same card and still display the message below it.

the problem is just as you all have stated....people give up looking after they get page after page of the same image.  I have to admit that i don't blame them - i have given up looking for some of my own cards after hitting page 10 and having seen so much repetition.  And, just to be clear - my comments are in no way a slight to any of the artists that have personalized cards, the cards them selves are wonderful!

I agree, it is not the artist, it is the system.  I believe that there is room for diversity.  However, what is seen is the same.  The first impression is the most important.  If I get the impression that the site is not good why do I come back?

The sys needs changing.  As for whether it is not high on the priority list?  It is a mistake to think it is not.

I too agree with you and think the guests would also agree.  I don't even look at that category anymore because there is never a day when I am frustrated with page after page of the same image.

It's too bad that the new cards category is frustrating, because it's a category that people (or me, at least) are naturally drawn to.

I agree with all of the above, even though the cards are wonderful designs, 15 or more of the same design shown on the new cards section is frustrating.   There is a lot of competition out there and anything that will turn the customer off is definetly not a good thing.   Perhaps the customer likes it that way, who knows, has anyone had any feedback on this from a customer?      rosiecards undecided

There has been some discussion on what to do here to prevent the same designs from showing up multiple times.  I'll check with the folks over here to see what we plan to do here.

Why not a whole sheet of random cards pulled from the last day (~400 cards) and displayed like the recently sold card set (a movie).  That way the shopper does not have to leave the page but gets to see a wide variety of new cards, and likely the "same image" cards will be spread around due to the randomizer.

Perhaps add a "pause" button because sometimes it's nice to stop and look at a few in a separate window.

Since the ability to "customize" is readily available and advertised now, why can't there just be one card put up and noted that it can be customized with ANY name, relation etc. ??  It would certainly save time on the part of artists as well as the reviewers with the same result and happier shoppers.

I don't know how well that would work, Ernestine. Customers seem to be doing specific searches for "31 birthday" etc - as shown by my sales notices - and they wouldn't find what they were looking for unless GCU also extended the keywords of all customizable cards to include every variation of every number of years (for example) to accommodate such searches.

It's been said before (I believe by Mindy, but I'm not going to search through the old posts to find it) that very few customers browse "What's New." Most customers seem to either browse categories or do a site-wide search for the card they want.

One thought.

Seeing that the New Cards link is one of the first a shopper will see and very likely will be the first one they click on, the page they go to is vitally important to the impression GCU makes to them.  It should be spectacular!

Perhaps the reason it is only lightly visited now is because return shoppers already know what is there, a fairly unappealing stream of serially approved cards that are difficult to browse.

I think Tom has a great point.  I don't know how the New category could be used much because in it's present state it is not really useable.

Greetings!
You're right, Corrie, Mindy has stated this.  And there seems to be many customers who find cards based on internet searches, as well, so they probably never see the New Card page.

On a personal note, and this is not meant to offend anyone. but, I really think that, we, as artist, see the site much differently than the average customer.  We are always looking at what's going on, how things are presented, how our cards are presented and in relation to the other cards on the site.  Most customers use the internet as a way of buying things conveniently, I seriously doubt that they spend much time looking for, or at, things that they didn't come to see.  For example, if I came to buy a birthday card for my friend, I would probably click on the birthday link, because I would feel pretty confident that I'd find a card there.  I wouldn't go to the New Cards right at the start, so I'd never know that there are 75 similar cards in a row.

GCU has been very honest with us as artist in giving us feedback from customers, like the Back of Card issue that was discussed and resolved.  I honestly believe that if the customers were complaining about the New Card page, then we would hear about it and something would be done to make this page more appealing to the people who pay the bills!  (That's our customers.)

My 2-cents!
