So, are you suggesting a more 'generic' avatar and not what I have on my card back?  Could easily change it.

Hi Nan, that's what some of us are suggesting.  Look at it this way, an avatar or profile picture is something that represents a person, therefore a picture of the person such as you have is perfect.  However, a logo that represents your business, which you would put on labeling for products you sell, should have something to do with the business not be a photo of the owner of the business.  If that makes any sense  Grin

Logos help you to 'brand' your art business so when folks go from your GCU store to your Zazzle store for example, they see the same logo and know its all part of the same business.

Hope that helps a bit.  It's one suggestion floating around among many others  Smiley

I think it is a given that what most of us want to have represent us in a forum setting is very different from the branding that we want for our work.

For some people, their logo works for them both ways.

I want a more personal "face" in the forum than I want to present as a brand. To have to make one image work in both settings weakens the choice for both as we try to straddle both worlds.

I've turned off the logo setting on the back of the cards, but I would not want my name removed anymore than GCU wants their name removed for client "sensibilities".

For most of my career I have created things for big companies like Absolut, Nike, HP and others where my name was nowhere to be seen. Millions of people remember the work I created but no one associates it with me. I accepted that then because the companies paid me very well, but even so, there is a sadness seeing the work out there fatherless.

Hi Jeff,

Only my opinion, but viewing hundreds and hundreds of artist's websites, blogs, and POD stores, I don't think it is a given that everyone understands that what is on the product and what you use to post are not necessarily the same thing.  Those artists that are working to 'brand' their art business are always obvious, as are those who are new to this type of environment.  I just think it's nice to offer examples of differences for those who would like to learn more or begin branding their work   Smiley

All this might be resolved if....

1)  GCU gave an additional option for Logo so that Profile Picture could be shown on the Bios and forum, and an artist's 'Logo' if they have one could be printed on the back of the card.  I also think that if there were two options like that, those people without business logo's would either keep that off or choose to create one.

and

2)  Maybe it's time for GCU to have a place where a new artist can go after signing up and learn about card templates, legal issues relating to images, image sizing, how the review process works, all the questions that are asked a hundred times a month by new artists who can't find an answer anywhere.  Some guidelines for the BOC could be placed here as well.

Just another 99-cents worth  Grin

I agree Doreen, and GCU has been working on a Wiki to help new artists for a long time. Not all of them end up in here.

I have been toying with an idea of a website for POD artists, a place I can give away some of the thousands of materials (papers, fonts, textures, clip art, illustrations) I've made and artists can meet and share ideas, creations, get help and support.

I have been thinking about collecting some of the great advice from the veterans on the board like Tom and Corrie and many others and creating a handy path through the first few weeks for newcomers and including it on the board.

Now, if I can only get a few extra hours in each day I'll be all set.  Smiley

I couldn't agree more with Doreen - I for sure wouldn't like to see the option where customers can remove the credits on the back.

The first thing I do when I receive a card is look at the credits, to see who the artist is and/or where I can buy the card. Without the credits people would be able to find GCU, but would never find ME - and as much as I like the people I've met here, we're all in this for our sales, right?

I do agree that some of the logos aren't professional. I went for the 'text only' option as that is the least distracting and still clear enough to point customers in the right direction.
And let's face it, there will always be people complaining, some may even don't like the GCU credits on the back, but that's the way it is.

Just my two cents Smiley

Well said! I totally agree on everything!  Wink

The images we have on our credits, in our stores, and in the forums should be 3 different files.  If artists want the same image used in more than one place, then they still can accomplish that as long as the size is consistent.

I do think the ones on the cards should have a very consistent style, size, and look to them, otherwise the cards look much less professional.  The text also needs to match the style of the rest of the back of the card.

Upscale and stylish real-life Avatars from our face pics would be an interesting approach for the BOC credits.

It's nice to know changes are under consideration.

I would hate to see artists loose their individuality.  I think the basic setup on back should be consistent with a specific space/location for artist's logos and/or names. Design of logo and/or name should be left up to each individual artists.

Where did the word avatar come from?  Had to look it up.

Webster definition of avatar:
noun chiefly Hinduism
a manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on earth; an incarnate divine teacher.
• an incarnation, embodiment, or manifestation of a person or idea : he set himself up as a new avatar of Arab radicalism.
• Computing a movable icon representing a person in cyberspace or virtual reality graphics.

Webster definition of logo:
noun ( pl. -gos)
a symbol or other small design adopted by an organization to identify its products, uniform, vehicles, etc. : the Olympic logo was emblazoned across the tracksuits.
a sweatshirt with the company logo emblem, trademark, brand, device, figure, symbol, design, sign, mark; insignia, crest, seal.

Sorry, Tom, no interest here in seeing an "avatar" on the BOC credits for our store. The "earth" logo we use is our brand, featured on packaging here in Holland (we license some of our designs) and also on our website. Not sure if consistency is really required, but professional quality should be.

No avatar for me either. As I said earlier, my red rose logo goes with me.
