A quick update.

1.  I have my 12-card spinner and top Banner Sign done.  I made the 8x10 Banner sign by printing my new square logo on photo paper and then pasting a copy to each side of 112# cover cardstock bought at Officemax.  Worked great!  I used the cardstock to also make up the pocket headers.

2.  I visited 2 retailers last weekend. The first one is a very popular craft store that has 4 spinners worth of cards and plenty of room for more.  After introducing myself to the owner, I mistakenly asked her fairly quickly "Are you interested in adding more Greeting cards?" She just as quickly said "No."    Huh

What an idiot I was to approach this "sale" that way. After saying "OK," I walked out and sat in my car for 10 minutes kicking myself for being so unprepared for that conversation.  A good salesman does not allow the other person the chance to say "No."  I did come up with a better plan for the second shop though.  There I started by showing her a few of my best cards, and got her to like the humor, like the product, and like me.  While she was enjoying the cards I explained I could provide cards at no cost to her, and she could pick from thousands of my cards or we could work on a few together for local sales.  She was pretty interested but she admitted her sales have been poor and she likely was going to close after Christmas.  Retailers have been closing all over the place.

I still have a lot of stores on my list to try though, but I can tell this is not going to be a cake walk.  Tongue

I'm am going to try to do some art fair/craft shows soon so I ordered a nice folding stand that can hold about 30 cards - a good value as shipping is free:

Anyone else venturing out?

Hi Tom,

You are right about getting them to like your product first and you, in fact having been on both sides of sales, in retail and business settings, that is the biggest battle. Remember even if they are not interested at that time if they like you they will remember you. It can help to be subtly persistent too,(not a pest though) dropping in again from time to time but not pressuring, just become a familiar friendly face, bring in some new cards, offer to leave a couple with them. Anyway, I should not be telling you I think you are leagues ahead of me in that department Wink

Just wanted to say good for you for getting out there with your wares! Grin

Thanks Pam.  I appreciate the support.  I stopped in at a bridal store and at 2 gifts shops today.  The bridal store owner won't be in until Tuesday but the sidekick worker felt they could be interested.  The next stop was a gift shop that had one spinner of cards, and guess what, they were very similar to mine - so no luck there.  The next stop was a "finer" home accesories/gift shop that I could tell my cards would not be a good fit.  They had one spinner of higher-end cards and the owner said even those don't sell well.  On the same block there is a drug store that sells Hallmark Carleton cards (1000s!) for 99-cent, some like mine in there also.

I did stop at the local coffee house and was able to get an appointment Monday with the store owner.  They sell a few local items already, so there is hope.

The last stop was a large craft show.   Big crowd and probably 200 booths but I'd say very little was being sold.  Only 2 people there selling "stamper" home-made cards, and both had not sold enough to even pay for their booth.  People are either out of money or cutting back significantly.

I'll keep trying.  Thanks for your words of encouragement Pam.

Tom,
You have been busy!
I do think that this is a difficult time to be selling anything. Even though a card is not a lot of money that's the problem Wink you have to sell a lot to make any significant profit. Retailers are like all of us, cutting back and probably reluctant to try something new.
Thanks for the card rack info also, very helpful, although sorry to hear the vendors at the craft show were not doing so well Sad

On another note I have not had a single sale here in 9 days, it's unusually quiet. Anyone else seeing this?

My sales are very irregular.  Just 1 card sold yesterday and 2 today so far.  Been averaging 7 or so per day.

My Christmas cards are not that good and thus I've sold only 1 sold far this year!  Tongue

Hang in there!!

Hi Tom,

Have you thought about florist shops, people buy flowers for many occasions; they could write out the card in the shop and have it delivered along with the flowers. Florist shops usually collaborate with other businesses like wedding shops, could be a way in if they know the florist that carries your cards?

Anyone that has larger original art on display in restaurants you should have cards for sale also so that someone could buy to show their partner before buying the original Wink or if they like it but can not afford the original.

I am not a looney bird but I have ideas!  How about using cards as fundraisers and getting your name around that way. Also, any candy shop, small hotel or motel lobby where people are traveling, set up some across the miles, missing you, etc plus holidays. then museums, small airports, government store, military base px,or college snack shop.
