Elizabeth-- isn't Etsy where you have to sell the product yourself.... they don't make the card for you?   If I had a framed original I wanted to sell of my watercolors, I'd have to ship it etc.  right?  Maybe I misunderstood what I read about Etsy.... Huh

Nan, That's a good point. I'm still investigating. If that's so and a card is listed, perhaps I could tell them the shipment would take about 1 week and then order and ship straight to the customer's location. Good point.

thanks for pointing that out,
elizabeth

OR, would it work to open up an Etsy shop and just post links to all your other shops as your store front?
Not sure if that's possible.  But it would act as a marketplace for just you.

I agree!!  Keeping up with everything can get overwhelming sometimes.  I am in the midst of starting on Etsy - taking a long time to set up my shop, so don't have any items listed yet (I have read positive things).  I'm also trying to get going here, market my CP shop more myself (since I opted out) and add the new products, add to my IK gallery, rework my web site, tweet, blog, and create art - oh yeah, and then there's "life" .  Not enough hours in the day Smiley.  It really helps to read how other artists are doing - both to get inspired and to decide where to spend my energy.  Thanks for sharing everybody!

Etsy does not allow you to just use it for links.  They mostly want you to sell original hand-made items.  Some of the people are printing their own cards and prints.  I'm not sure about everyone - haven't figured that part out yet.  I have original silk scarves, paintings, sculptures, wood pieces, etc. that I plan to sell there and even then I need to be careful with not linking to my own website where the same items are available.  I intend to look into how one manages to sell open edition prints and cards without printing them yourself.  I see people doing it.

Hi,

I've been reading the replies to this topic and all I can say is that I'm glad it's not just me!

I opened stores at both CP and GCU about 3-4 months ago.

I paid for a year at CP the only sales I've made have been to one friend. I've worked at it. Recently I've been trying to find ways to get my shop and/or images noticed. I saw that they were having a contest, but when I looked at the rules I discovered that it was only open to American Artist. This despite the fact that they have both artists and shoppers from all over the world. If I hadn't paid for the year I would have closed up shop.

The quality of the products my friend ordered were very good, but. I've been planning to order some items (tote bag, travel mug etc.) for marketing. But is this just sending good money after bad? (to quote the old cliquish)

At GCU I've made a couple of sales to strangers and seem to be getting my stuff looked at and it didn't cost anything to set-up the storefront. My friends like it and I've been ordering my own card for marketing. I'm excited about it.

Here are my links including my own website that is still under development.

Sorry I seem to have posted twice, I've deleted the contents for this second one. I'm new to this type of communications, so bare with me please.

It takes a while to make money on CP - and most online site.  A few months is not enough.  I made next to nothing my first year, but then it grew and grew and became significant and addicting. Shocked  However, since CP changed their policies it went dead for me and, I admit, my feeling toward the whole thing has also gone dead  Sad. (Art.com all over again  Angry.)  Regardless -- If you are going to give it a real try you need to give it more time.  Make more designs, put them on more products, take the time to write all the descriptions, etc.  3-4 months is not enough.

I suspect GCU will be the same, but good for you for making sales already.  I haven't, but I haven't loaded many cards yet either. I figure I'll give any of these PODs a year with good effort before I make decisions regarding success.

Thanks Amy,

It's taken a long time in my life to get to the point where I'm trying to make a go of it as an artist. It's scary! I guess I just have to learn to be patient with myself.
