MINDY OR SHAUN!!!!!
Mar 16th, 2009, 5:52am

I have wrote this several times and gotten some responses from artists but never from gcu!
I ordered several of my cards to see how the printing came out.  I was expecting wonderful results since most of the artist rave about the printing, but this was not my experience.  Colors were overall dull but most of all, all pinks have come out dusty purple and all my oranges have turned rusty colored.
I had to delete an easter card because of this problem fearing if anyone purchased it there would be no return business.  a couple of artists gave suggestions to increase saturation but as far as the pinks to go to some color websites and pick out some colors from other color systems other than pantone to help.
are you aware of this problem?  I feel like people look at one thing on the monitor and get something totally different.  what is the deal?!
Also, my url started out being /sventuripickett and for some reason is now /a ton of numbers here and then sventuripickett.  Is this right? now i have to resend my url as this long drawn out link????
please respond as this has been posted at least three times with no response from you at all!

This sounds frustrating Stacy,

Sometimes this can be caused by monitor settings or color profiles. I remember once years ago finding out the colors I was seeing on my screen looked VERY different on company owner's screen.

Just for your reference I took some of the background colors as I see them.

Your "Easter Rabbit" = HEX #C688D3
"Mermaid birthday" = hex #E39BCB
"Just hi" = hex #A7B462

I am pulling these from the tiled display, not the large one.

I hope this helps.

Good Luck,

hi whisper,
thanks for going to the trouble to do this.  I am using rgb setting and the pantone solid coated system
(because this is the color system my biggest client requires).  what system is "HEX" associated with
so i can compare what you are seeing?
thanks,
stacy

The solution to your problem with colors such as pinks and oranges when your card is printed probably lies within the program you are using to make your cards.
Let me explain:
Forget Pantone. The RGB color displaying your card at GCU is very different than the CMYK color the printing press uses. Follow this link to get a basic understanding of that difference.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CMYK

Most programs (Photoshop for sure) should show you in your color palette if an RGB color is out of 'gamut' with CMYK.
It can get a little complicated for an Artist if you have not worked in Printing.
My suggestion would be to GOOGLE some of the many tutorials on your program related to your 'gamut' problem.

There is always the possibility 'gamut' is not you're problem. Since SHAUN and MINDY are in control of the printing they may have a different answer for you.

In the meantime the Wikipedia link above is good info for all Artists here at GCU.

Hope this helps.

thanks rob,
but i have been told many times by artists here that the printer in use doesn't print from cmyk like you would think but directly from rgb - what we send.
I have heard it enough to assume that it is true, (first time i have ever heard of this method) but if it's cmyk then i need to use the cmyk pallet in
my photo shop.  it is very confusing.
thanks

Hi Stacy,

Oops! Wasn't thinking about the fact cards are printed one at a time which would take the printing press out of the equation. So of course you are right. CMYK would not be used. The printing is probably a Dye Sub process using a printer.
Maybe Shaun or Mindy have information here on the printing process they could direct us to.

Meantime I just wanted to add, you're cards and ideas are just great. Hope you solve this color problem. Keep up the good work.

Incidentally, I don't know if it applies to this Printer situation but if you are trying to match screen colors to colors on paper explore the TRUMATCH System as opposed to PANTONE.

Stacy,
Have you calibrated you monitor lately? This can be a major reason for colors being different when printed.
If your monitor is not calibrated on a regular basis, the colors you are seeing are not the same as the colors that everyone else sees!
Have you printed one of the cards at home? Did the color remain true?
I calibrated my monitor a while ago, and I was shocked at the difference it made.
