HELP-Quick Mask, how to get rid of?
Feb 23rd, 2009, 1:06pm

I have been having a problem,  can any one that works in photoshop-windows tell me how to get rid of a quick mask, shows up on background.  I have tried flattening, everything I can find in the manuals but can't get rid of it.  makes a soft edge on the hand-lettering that I do not want.  please help.  Thanks Norval

Hi Norval,
I haven't worked in photoshop in a long time so I am very rusty, but can you hide or discard the layer that the quick mask is on?

Hi Norval, Alda's suggestions should work for you providing the mask is it's own layer. Turn off the 'eye' icon beside mask where your layer bar is to hide it or select the mask layer and then delete (twice if the first delete just fills the entire page with mask color) Another way is to lock the mask to the background page (if your background is an image, create a new layer so that you have a blank layer to lock mask layer to) Then under layers, select merge linked which will just flatten those two layers into one. Now you can delete this layer or select the mask with dotted cut line tool to clear and mask should be gone for good. Good luck with that. Cheers, Lisa

Lisa and Alda, thank you.  Lisa I haven't been able to get it to work yet.  The problem maybe working in photoshop 5.5 and I don't have the settings in layers that you have. The link shows up but I can't get the lettering layer to unlink from the background???, even when I   duplicate, to a new layer and get rid of the merged and try to flatten to a new background.  The background is white.        Norval

Hi Norval,
Try this..... in your layers palette, click on the link symbol between the mask and the art and it should unlink the mask. Then right click on the mask and you should see some options....one is to discard the mask. Click on discard the mask. Your artboard will probably then become active, so click on the top tool bar "select" and on the drop down menu "deselect" and that should deactivate the artboard. I just did it in ps 6.0 and it seemed to work. Hopefully it will in yours, too.

Thanks Alda I just read your post so will try as soon as I get off here.
Today is a day of problems.  The company that I have worked for all these years put in their own server.  They gave me the instructions, pin number, access name, etc., but it is one of these super secure sites.   My browser e6 doesn't seem to work, something about security, I have everything but the PCT1.0.  What is this???  I'm calling them tomorrow but do you have any ideas?
They did this because it will accept massive art files, before I was snail mailing hard copy or eMailing zipped files.  They will not accept hard copy at all now. All artwork now has to be scanned and sent over the computer!  Progress!  Everything seems to be computers now.   Norval

Hi Norval,
Hope the suggestions work. Sorry for all your problems. I can't help with explorer problems, but whenever I have had problems with Microsoft issues, I've gone to their website and searched the problem for a solution. Sometimes I've been able to get what I need without having to wait for an IT tech. (that is if it's not too technical an issue...I'm really not that computer savy.) Maybe it's just a minor setting change that you have to make on your computer? Try typing in PCT1.0 in their search engine and see what you come up with.

Anyway, it's just a suggestion. Hope you can resolve it soon. I know how frustrating computer problems can be!

Alda, thanks for answering back.  It was ME! Shocked-----a matter of mind set.  One of their tech people contacted me.  I was automatically adding the [www.] to their address when there wasn't any, right in front of my face on their downloaded instruction manual and I still kept adding it over and over.  I guess we see what we want to see Grin.        Norval

Grin I take back what I said about progress. To sent four files took all of five minutes. I LIKE IT! [ and I am not screaming, hell, yes I am, with joy. ], sending off work use to be a pain, the packing, trying to get it in the mail or overnight carrier in time to met a deadline [ I still have a record album cover, flying somewhere over Dallas, it has been for over twenty years now? ].  This is the way to go.    Norval

Alda and Lisa, I don't know what method worked, I have been trying one then the other back and forth, but this morning I was finally able to unlink the layers and get rid of the mask Smiley and can finally erase the white background to transparent so the under-lays of lettering can show though.  You made this card work.  You can expect to start seeing this technique used on GCU now.  Big Thank You       Norval
