I need some ideas...
Feb 23rd, 2009, 5:36am

My sister and I have a variety of cards based on Fairy Tales, that's what really got me started selling greeting cards in the first place. They have sold fairly well in markets where people can pick them up and look at them, not so well online. I'm wondering if they would do better if I added sayings or verses to the front; personally, I like them better on their own, but I have learned you can't always let your feelings stand in the way of sales. I have made a few (such as the "just believe"Cinderella card). I am asking for all of your very talented and excellent opinions....any ideas on how to improve these?Do you know of any sites where they might sell better?

Hi Angela,
I am new to making cards so take this as a 'consumer mindset' thought!
With the thought to get the customers attention and lead them to open the card just put the first two or three words to your inside content on the front, eg, card#236788 The Sleeping beauty.
Put 'Ever feel like...' on the front of the card, personally that would make me want to look inside to see what was to follow.
I'm planning to try this tactic on some cards soon. I thought it might work well on yours too as you have a unique line of cards that capture the eye right away. Smiley
Pamela.

Thank you for the question, Angela. I am all ears. I have though about the "words on front or not" situation. How to have the seeker click on my card. I an anxious to see all tips from others. Thank you Pamela for your input. I like your idea. Also, does anyone know how those looking for a card feel at ease with adding or changing their own text. That is, do they understand the ease with which they can add a name or address and all?

Thank you for all ideas given here,
Michael

Thanks for the compliment Angela and good luck with whatever you decide to try. I love your cards they are unique and creative and very well done. I am sure many more suggestions will be on their way and those cards of yours will be flying out the door in true Fairy tale fashion!

Angela you may also need to find a way to attract the people who love fantasy and fairytale stuff. I would think it is a huge market. Those people may not necessarily be coming to GCU to look for those themes yet. I think GCU shoppers are looking to meet specific needs first, and then wind up browsing. (Just guessing here.) If you also have a web site or can make some webpage that attracts those people for perhaps a few free fairy tale coloring pages or some other fairy tale resources. There you would include links to your fairytale cards at GCU. If you don't have a website, I think you can make a squidoo lens/page like this, or even a facebook page. (Forgive if I'm suggesting things you have already done.)

Wow, Catinka, what a great idea! I never even thought about coming from that slant! That might be a really good suggestion for other people who have speciality niches, such as dogs, birds, and other specific subjects they paint or photograph.

Hi Angela,

Love your Fairytale cards!

I wanted to add to Catinka's suggestions that you could also start very quickly and easily a free blog that would feed much quicker out to the internet for searches than a web site.  Not saying that a web site isn't a good thing to have (I personally have had both) it's just that they each have their own purpose.  Lots of folks doing their own artwork and such have both.  I use blogspot and feel it's quite easy to get started with.  Lots of people have wordpress and typepad.  I think you have to pay a bit for typepad.  Do some research and consider adding a blog to your marketing tools so folks can find your lovely cards!

Your fairy tale/girl cards are very well done - like movie or play shots. What fun. Another thing that seems to be taking off nowadays is themed parties for kids. People are offering quick plays/skits and kits for these parties. It seems that if you like putting together these scenes, you might enjoy also writing up a little play script to either sell (inexpensively), or have as a free download. Text always feeds the search engines hunger.

Next idea - do you also offer the service to take photos of people's kids in these roles - a kind of custom photography? The way your copy is written it almost sounds as if that is what you are also offering. That is why I thought of it. I think it might be something people want too. (But ideas are a dime a dozen!)
Congratulations on the blog. Great job!

Angela, Your images are wonderful and different.  You must have a viable audience out there.  They just have to find you.  And your Blog is wonderful.  I'll bet they will find it.  Keep it fresh.  Don't let it grow stagnat or the search engines will forget you.  You don't need to change a lot every week... but something.
Pamela's idea of the wording on front, was my initial thought as I do this often.
All good ideas here and you are so open to trying something new, I'm sure you will find success.
Happy Creating!
Sue
