Loss of mother category
Feb 14th, 2008, 11:44am

cry With Mother's Day coming up, I felt compelled to create a card for those who are facing their first Mother's Day after the death of their mother.  I didn't really know where to put it as there didn't seem to be a category for Loss of Mother.  I put it in the general "Thinking of You" category, but wasn't sure if that was appropriate.  Any suggestions?

Would that perhaps be a sympathy card or a sub-category to the sympathy category?  By the way, very thoughtful idea.  Nobody ever gave me a card like that, but if they had it would have really touched me.

Smiley  I'm so sorry, Cara, that you lost your mother... i hope you're doing ok.
I considered the sympathy aspect, however, it just didn't feel right... I didn't want it to come across as sympathy as much as encouragement... this would be especially true if the loss had occured several months previously... I, thank God, have not had to personally experience that tragedy, but have known many who have, one being my own mom at the death of my grandmother... it makes me sad to think about it, but death is as much a part of life as birth...

Very thoughtful suggested that will be well appreciated for sure:

We've added the two following categories that may both be fitting:

Occasions >> Sympathy >> Loss of a Mother
http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/shopping/cb.asp?cid=1579

Holiday >> Mother's Day >> In Rememberance of Mother
http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/shopping/cb.asp?cid=1582

A nice article from one woman sharing your sentiment of Missing her mother on Mother's Day:

Smiley Thanks, Mindy, for both the article and the additional categories.  GCU has been a great blessing to me.  Each time one of my cards sell, it humbles me.  They are bought in love, sent in love and received in love, and as odd as it may seem, I feel a kinship with each one of them.  They have, after all, taken with them a little piece of my heart and spirit.  I hope that each card that is bought from my shop brings as much joy and blessings to those who bought it and received it as it does to me just knowing that they wanted to send one of mine to people they care for.  God bless you all and may you be safe.

Gina, Cara & Mindy -- your heartfelt words and support are appreciated.

The conversations in this thread are an example of the care and thoughtfulness I admire in the GCU community.  I lost both parents separately at 13 and a sister a few years ago.  My other sister and I (also an an artist and 3000 miles away) have shared many personally created "remembrance" cards over the years, too personal for anything to be put on GCU.  But sharing the remembrance of a beloved family member is something I believe people DO want to do.

Ernestine, let me say I am so sorry for the loss of your parents at such a tender age.  That must have been extremely difficult.  And to lose both of them in the same year Sad  I am also sorry for the loss of your sister too.   I still have both of my sisters, thank god.

I really think that Gina hit on a very thoughtful card type for people dealing with the loss of people they cared so much about.  It's like this scenario....A young lady loses her mother, she misses her terribly.  A best friend or good friend realizes that its been 1 year of her friend's mother's death.  So she sends her a card just to say, she knows, and she understands and that she is there if she needs her.  Very kind, supportive and heartfelt.

Ernestine, my heart broke for the young girl who lost her parents so at such a tender age.  How hard it must have been for you to face the landmarks and turning points of your life without your parents.  In spite of it, or maybe because of it, I don't know,  you emerged into a wonderful artist.  Your artwork touched me.  I especially loved the "old boat" and the bring home the troops, with the toy soldiers in the cupped hands.  The boat made me think of a happy young boy on the water with his friends, and now the boat is waiting, hoping for someone to come along, fix it up and let it bring them joy again.  I loved it.  Hope your day is nice.  Smiley
