Patriotism can be considered a very positive attitude and belief to present when it is rooted in the goodness of a country. When such a wholesome attitude is combined with the overall positive nature of the Christmas holiday, a card of this nature can aid in delivering an upbeat sentiment that will not be lost on others. In many ways, this can contribute to a sense of community that is sometimes overlooked.

November 17, 2011 marks the beginning of the Great American Smokeout, an event sponsored by the American Cancer Society, and held annually on the third Thursday in November.

Smokers are encouraged to kick the habit – either by quitting or making a plan to quit smoking. More than 46 million Americans continue to smoke despite the fact that giving up the tobacco habit brings real health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, reduced risk of coronary heart disease, cancer and diabetes, just to name a few.

HALLOWEEN CAN BE A TREAT FOR PETS, TOO

When it comes to Halloween (October 31), the focus is on jack o’ lanterns, costumes, decorations, and other spooky and scary stuff. But while you’re passing out the candy to the trick-or-treaters, don’t forget to take some safety precautions for your pets if you don’t want Fluffy or Fido to have an unhappy Howl-o-ween (or Meow-o-Ween)!

Here are the top five ways to help keep your cat or dog safe on Halloween:

  • Under no circumstances allow your pet to eat chocolate, or they may suffer theobromine poisoning, which can be fatal. In addition, any candy with artificial sweetener (Xylitol) can also cause Xylitol toxicity.
  • Halloween decorations that move, blink, or otherwise animate may look cool, but the electric wires and cords can give your pet a shock if chewed on, so keep them out of reach.
  • Jack o’ lanterns are a big part of the Halloween festivities – over 46% of Americans carve a pumpkin for the holiday.  Be aware that a lit candle inside may be traditional, but cause a fire hazard if a pet knocks it over, or gets burned with the flame. An LED light is probably a better choice.
  • It’s probably better to keep dogs and cats in another room when you’re opening the door for trick-or-treaters. You don’t want them roaming the streets after dark.
  • Pets and costumes don’t always mix. Don’t make your pet wear one if it will make them uncomfortable.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

  • More women die of breast cancer every year than any other cancer except lung cancer
  • Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed  cancer in women
  • Although a woman’s chances of getting breast cancer doubles if she has a close relative (mother, daughter, sister) who has had breast cancer herself, 70-80% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no history of the disease in their families

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, dedicated to educating and raising awareness of breast cancer, preventing cancer, and the importance of early detection that saves lives. The international symbol of breast cancer is a pink ribbon,  first adopted by Susan G. Komen for the Cure in 1991.

Each October, fundraising events are held in many communities in the U.S. and internationally, including the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, and the Komen Race for the Cure. This year (2011) is the 25th anniversary of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Day of Atonement

Yom Kippur is the final day of the High Holy Days (or High Holidays)  in the Jewish calendar that began with Rosh Hashanah (also called Jewish New Year). It is considered the holiest day of the year.

During this time, celebrants observe a period of fasting, prayer, and repentance for wrongs committed against God, as well as wrongs committed against friends and family. During the High Holy Days, God makes judgment on mankind, and on Yom Kippur, an individual’s fate is sealed for the coming year in either the Book of Life or the Book of Death. Yom Kippur is the final opportunity to make amends and seek forgiveness.

That’s right, matey. On September 19th, all good folk are hereby enjoined to speak the pirate’s way, and to make merry with all things piratical for the sheer, wicked joy of it. Aye, and lift a glass o’ grog to the patron saint of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, too.
