Updated keywords not reflected in search results
Dec 14th, 2011, 2:52am

I added and edited the keywords for all my cards a couple of weeks ago, including a couple that were still to be approved. How come the only 2 cards that appear for that keyword search are the ones that were in the queue but have since been approved?
It's as if the search is not taking account of the updated keywords for all the other cards.

Hi Dave,
Edits to keywords take up to 24 hours to be reflected in onsite search results.  Certainly not weeks.  First let's confirm that we're talking about GCU onsite search vs search engines, right?  If so please reply with some pid#s that we can look at to dig into this issue.  Thanks!

Yes, I am talking about the GCU search.
If I search for "Lake District photo card", the only 2 cards which come up are 881978 and 873919
Many (most probably) of my other Lake District cards include at least "Lake District" and "photo" in their first 10 keywords. eg 877508, yet do not appear.
Similarly, a search for "Yorkshire Dales photo card" brings up no results at all. The first 3 keywords for 883017 are "Yorkshire Dales, photo, card" - Just one example.

Also, why do none of my photos appear in a search for "landscape photo", when that is a key phrase in probably all of my cards, it is included in many of the descriptions, and pretty much all of them are in the Any Occasion / Blank Note Cards » Outdoor / Landscapes category?

Also, why are plurals treated so bizarrely, depending on the word?
EG, Search for "dog photo" or "dog photos" and you get an identical number of results. Try "waterfall photo", and you get 87 results, search for "waterfall photos", you get none.

Hi Dave,
You've got me  Shocked

I know and have shared with you that we do make some unnatural things happen with "photo card" terms to best direct shoppers to do-it-yourself style photo cards vs cards of a photographic nature.

I'll have to direct this to someone else here closer to the search logic.  Stay tuned.

Hi Mindy,
Glad to see it's got you stumped too!

Just looking at the few cards which do appear for a "landscape photo" search, some of the cards have got me scratching my head as to why they are there at all. There are cards that don't feature the word "photo" in the title, keywords, description or category, and are not "photo cards" in any sense of the word.

If you search for "landscape photograph", you get the kind of results that I would have expected to see.
It comes up with 1392 cards, however, this brings up another problem that I have seen intermittently. You can only see the first page of results as clicking on any other page just shows you the same lot over and over again.
At least a couple of mine are on there. (Yay)!
This treatment by the search engine of the word photo obviously has a massively detrimental effect for people with cards featuring photos like mine rather than "photo cards" in the GCU sense of the word.

Maybe you could add an "Advanced Search", with a check box to include or not include "photo cards" (in the GCU sense of the word) in the searches. If the buyer opts to not include those cards, then the remaining cards could be searched using all their keywords for a more meaningful search.

Good food for thought, thank you.  I will forward it to the programing team.
