I may be a misfit in this group!
Aug 7th, 2011, 10:33am

My art has always been reaching out in many directions with Oil, Watercolor, pen and ink, woodcut prints, digital art, enhanced photographs, various computer graphic programs. It has been well received
and I have had some success. To me it is not the method that is important, it is the results that matter.
I have had some cards put on hold and some have been sent back for editing. I was able to edit one that
made the grade but the others I just deleted because it is too time consuming to do all these things.
I am working on new subjects for greeting cards and I hope that some of them will make the grade.
My only interest and passion is to make art that is the best I can do and that makes me happy.
No matter how others may feel or try to direct the way I work I don't let it dismay me or discourage me.
I can learn to make changes in my art and I do every day but I won't let anyone direct my hand or my
mind as to what I can do. The use of digital art and computer aided programs is the new art form an it will one day be accepted as great art as well as the other forms. The old art forms are good and I still use them every day. I am filling a sketch book now with my ideas. It is not in the computer it is in a simple pad of paper. Isn't that good? At 82 years of age I am still an active artist and my hand is steady and my eye is strong. I wish all of you the very best and lets keep painting!

Hello Fred,

Good to hear you are not discouraged by the new process and just keep creating!  The thing for every artist, especially artists whose primary output has been fine art, to remember is...

Fine Art does not necessarily translate into a marketable greeting card.  A beautiful painting that might be accepted in a fancy New York Gallery and sell hundreds of fine art prints does not mean that it will sell as a greeting card...fine art card maybe.  GCU is not about Fine Art Greeting cards and I don't use it as such.  When people wish to purchase my 'fine art' as greeting cards they do so via Redbubble.  Fine Art greeting cards should be by nature printed on archival paper and with archival inks.  So, if any Fine Art artist has a piece of artwork declined by GCU as not marketable it does not mean that the piece is not brilliant, only that it does not make a good greeting card for GCU.

Always good to hear from you Fred and I enjoy seeing your new creations!

Hi Fred,
You said what you felt and it's all good. Your creations are unique and very nice. I too do most of my creating by hand at this time.  I believe there's room for the old fashioned way as well as the new. As Doreen said if one outlet for your work doesn't work on a particular piece then there are other outlets.

Happy Creating!
Charmaine

Dear Fred, You are anything but a misfit. You are inspirational and your work is beautiful. Keep on creating 'happy' - what you set out to do with your art is exactly what you instill in the viewer. From your fish to friends waving hello (love the emotion felt in that image), I'm all smiles. You signed with 'Happy old artist' but I think 'Happy young at heart artist' better describes you. Cheers from a Happy youngster (53) who wants to be like you when I grow up! Lisa

Fred, You're definitely an important part of the GCU community. GCU artists love to share, inspire and help one another.  You're definitely inspirational with your beautiful art.

The new review process is taking some getting used to.  It has definitely forced me to take a harder look at the cards I'm creating.

Welcome to the GCU community. I look forward to hearing more of your insights and seeing more of your gorgeous cards.    Cathy

Welcome to GCU Fred!  Your cards are beautiful and you are certainly NOT a misfit around here    I think hand drawing and painting will always be a wonderful art.  Hang in there, yours will sell very well.  I see what you mean though - it would be more difficult to change or "edit" your work.

If you get a feeling and a message working together, chances are it's a good greeting card - doesn't really matter what kind of art it is. I use the computer because my hands don't do what my brain tells them to do! Har-har! So the folks who can paint or draw by hand, more power to ya.
