Best Selling Color of Card?
Mar 21st, 2011, 10:39am

So, there are market studies/research studies for lots of things ... blue in the reception room at the doc's office is calming, red in the dining room stimulates appitite, red cars are more likely to get pulled over when speeding, etc etc.

Has there ever been a study on what color of greeting card outsells others, all other variables being the same?  Anyone know the answer?  Curious ... I have a design that came to me while I was sleeping last night that can go into any card background color so I thought I'd give it a sales edge, if there was such a thing based on color  Wink

There are industry clubs - oh I mean associations  Grin that have this information.  Here is a list of some of them:

http://www.greetingcard.org/   Greeting Card Association
http://www.colormarketing.org/  Color Marketing Group
http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/index.aspx  Pantone North America

You'll have to pay of course, because they are clubs er, uh, I mean trade organizations. But membership will give advance peek into the color trends for the upcoming seasons and years. This goes for any industry that banks on colors. For example: Interior decorating, print, motion graphics, and of course textile fashions. Marketing surveys cost big $$$$ and they try to recover the costs.

I just attended a color seminar on a different topic - (not from one clubs of the above). The lecturer was fantastic! The one thing that I remember, is too much solid yellow and solid orange is hard on the eyes. Break it up with other colors.

Of course, sales of the colors differ from country to country. The North American color trends is different than the "International" color trends.

Good morning Peggy,

I'd have to go with white as a background that is most widely sold.  Not because white is a fovorite so much, but that is the most common and readily available of card stock and most art or greeting card images are printed on it as a neutral backdrop for the subject.  However each card category is different and depending on the mood you want to illicit with a certain card, the color could change.  Red's, bright yellow and other bright colors say excitement, happiness & joy.  Blue and grey are calming colors, where warmtones for sympathy and encouragement work best.  A artist knows the mood they wish to convey and so go with your feeling and artistic flair with the colors that you feel convey the feeling of your card.

Hope you're staying dry from that doozy of a rain last night.  I was over eating a late dinner at Jimmy's restaurant when it hit.  CRAZY!!!

Best always, Randy

Thanks, guys!  The actual design is going to be a black/white thing, but I thought maybe I'd throw a nice simple solid color behind it.  Simple will pull focus into the design the best - now to decide on the color!

I appreciate the feedback!

Some years back portrait photographers started pushing images with lost of whites (backgrounds, dresses) as fashionable; they also made quite a saving on ink used in printing.  Roll Eyes

Hi Peggy, all,

I did a search for "most favored color this spring" and got some interesting sites. According to this study, blue is the fav. Wink

Well, like Randy said, is has to do with your mood. I actually got to thinking about this last night when I wanted to put a pale lavender border on a card and my doggon art program was stuck on blue.  Shocked After much fiddling I finally got the color purple out of it. It looks ok.  Tongue
