I opened my store at Cafepress in 2005. I sold a few things a month, but at the time I also did not do the marketing or have the online presence I do today. About 2-years ago, Cafepress changed things so that no matter what you set your pricing to, anything that sells from the general Marketplace rather than directly through your store, you make 10%. Trust me when you compare it to Zazzle, this sucks. I get $2.00 for a tshirt sale on Cafepress now vs $6 on Zazzle.
I sold more on Zazzle in 3-months than I sold on Cafepress in 5 years. Many of us artists aborted Cafepress and they are now struggling a bit to recover. Paying for a store on Cafepress AND getting only 10% from a sale is ridiculous. Trust me 99.9% of your sales are from the General Marketplace, as it is on GCU. And though I still have a store with some things in it because I haven't moved them all to Zazzle yet, I sell daily at Zazzle and maybe 1 item every week or two at Cafepress.
Anyone on GCU who knows me, knows that I market my stores about as much as any sole proprietor can and it does NOTHING to increase sales at Cafepress. I even participated in a big Cafepress test where I was allowed to create a cool widget and recorded visits and sales for 30-days...nothing.
In my opinion, Cafepress is an absolute waste of time. If you are just starting out...go with Zazzle.
