What is a blog?
Mar 15th, 2011, 1:16am

Hello all!

I know to some this is going to sound like a stupid question. Cheesy I am one of those people who seems to stay one or two steps behind everyone else, but I'm catching up fast. I would really like to know exactly what a blog is, and what can you do with it? I would love to hear about what you have done with yours, and I would love to see links posted here so I could get some ideas.

The reason being, I just created my author page on Amazon where all my books can be found that are on Amazon, and it says that I can make it to where my posts to my blog automatically post there. That really interested me because I am not exactly sure what a blog is supposed to be about.

Also, is there any good sites where you can start one for free?

I know, questions... questions... questions.

Hey, look at it this way, now everyone knows that I really don't know everything.  Roll Eyes

lol sounds like question my mom would ask Grin Don't feel bad

1. A blog can be about whatever you want, in your case about your books your cards here or other creative things your involved in or all of the above

this can be background info, your thoughts, funny stories the sky is the limit One big tip is to try and direct your readers to one of the places where you sell things every chance you get

2.I don't have anything i can send you to now but I'm sure there are alot of artistS here that will love to show you there blogs. you can setup a free blog at

No such thing as a stupid question!  Smiley  A blog can be a commentary or a series of essays too. A professional blog at its best has a unifying theme of some sort. My own blog which, unfortunately, has not be updated for a while (too much writing in my "real" job), is about tips and tricks for photography. Several GCU artists who are more "full-time" than I am maintain quite active blogs.

The main thing is that you write about what you like and what you really know about.

My blog is at http://redrosedigitalart.blogspot.com . As I said, it's been a while.  Wink

Cheers,

My Blog is different things, depending on my mood!

Hmmm, never thought of connecting my book on Amazon with my blog.
Need to look into that!

There are quite a number of free blogs: Facebook, Xanga, WordPress to name a few. Each one banks on individuals signing up - membership is required. The business model behind a blog is that they make money on advertisements and paid memberships. Paid membership is typically for those who are using for business purposes. Facebook makes companies pay as does Xanga - not sure about WordPress. All of these are considered social networking sites. Most blogs are free for personal use only. Which is probably the driving reason for it becoming a daily diary.

Don't be afraid to do some searches on this topic. There is a wealth of information out there as it was an emerging internet technology. It pretty much hit market saturation in my opinion.

One other thing that you should be aware of...and there is no politically correct way to say...so I'm just going to blurt it out. Marketing companies are hired to generate buzz about products, topics, and to sway opinion about public relations. Not everything you read on blogs are thoughts or opinions from actual real people.

I checked out your blog. Very impressive! It's funny, roses are my favorite flower to photograph as well. As a matter of fact, I live on Rose Lane. Isn't that funny, too? No, I didn't pick its name. The lady that used to own this land was named Rose so they named it after her. I plan to plant lots of Roses when my husband finishes our new house. I just wanted to tell you one thing though, I went to your store here (very impressive setup by the way), and when I entered anything into your "Search My Store" it took me right back to the first page of your cards. Just thought you would like to know. Thanks for the link to your blog. I now have some idea what a blog can be about by looking at yours. I will be back to read it more, seeing how I love photography and roses. Thanks a lot and good luck on your sales.  Smiley

Thanks for the link!

Did you read this there? "As of 16 February 2011, there were over 156 million public blogs in existence."

Wow! Shocked

I struggled with blogging for the first year, I'm just not the kind of person who wants to chat about what I'm working on or what I'm feeling every day  Grin

Then I finally found what worked for me and I think many of us are like that.  I have one main blog and two other 'mini' blogs that are attached to websites of mine.  All are driving traffic and bringing those all important backlinks and sales my way.

For my main blog I choose a theme and like to have fun throwing out facts and non-sense while interspersing my own art and that of others.

http://www.salonofartgreetings.blogspot.com/

Then I have a mini-blog attached to my online Newsletter which acts as an archive for my Fan Page tutorial links and my newsletter Photo Tips.  This I only started a couple months ago and is already picking up significant traffic.

http://salonofartnewsletter.weebly.com/archives.html

Then the other mini blog is attached to my PAWSitively PETrageous site and acts as a place to archive my newsletter Just for Pets Column as well as a place to chat about our pets.  This too is new and generating traffic already.

So, there are some variations for you.  I did a fair amount of research and ended up at Blogger.com over Wordpress based on features and recommendations.  So I'd really encourage you to look at their features and not put a tremendous amount of work into design without playing with their features.  That way you can change over to another provider without losing much.

Hope it's helpful  Grin
