Tool for Image Search
Mar 7th, 2011, 8:28pm

Through another forum I was introduced to http://www.tineye.com.
This is a tool that can be used for finding exact images. It is touted as an image reverse lookup. Other graphic sites are using to find copyright infringements.

They do have a plugin for browsers.

I wanted to pass this along to everyone.

Thank you!

That might come in useful sometime.  Hopefully not for someone using one of mine though!  lol

I hate to say it, but every photographer or artist who publishes on the web ends up at some time or another dealing with image piracy.

It's just a matter of time. I didn't think it would happen to me but it did (years ago). I've learned to expect the unexpected.

Needless to say it was indeed a learning experience for me. I'll take a moment and share my "Lessons Learned". It just might help other artists when the time comes.

1. A polite legal sounding letter using the phrase "cease and desist".  It is not needed but I like to throw in the document number from the Library of Congress which references the copyright image that has been infringed upon.

2. The email letter (referenced above) is sent to the web hosting company and the account user who did the infringing when possible. Odds are it will end up on a blog site.

3. The inner techie inside of us will say "no big deal, you knew it would happen", but the artist inside will want to be loudly indignant.

4. More copyright infringements dealing with images occur from other graphic artists, sculpturers, and marketing companies than any other industry or private individuals. Yes, they should know better; however, art schools don't mandate copyright law classes.

5. Know your licenses that you have sold.

I've used TinEye for about a year now and it has helped me to locate my images appearing on other sites where I hadn't given permission.  Most were blogs and if my name was sited and there was a link back to me or the site, I'm fine with it and would send a note or comment post of thanks.  BUT where not mentioned, I'd send a note requesting that they provide a back link and credit my name.  Most were very cooperative.  Yet I did find a few instances where the website did not respond or refused and the legal sounding letter using the phrase "cease and desist" did prove useful.  Yet in the case where someone is actually trying to SELL your work online the letter needs to be more than just "legal sounding."

Another way to rip people off! Oh, it's the internet everythings free....That's pure B.S.!! Again, if you don't respect your work enough to see it's value you're from another planet! I've made people pay in the thousands of dollars for infringement. These were not other artist's - these were major corp. who should know better. That's my two cents!
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!
