"Fine Art" Category?
Feb 26th, 2011, 9:30am

Not sure if I'm missing something, but I would love to see a category for "Fine Art".  I see Asian Art, Mosaic Art, etc. but not the term Fine Art, which is more appropriate for the kind of realism art I do.  I usually just end up choosing "Illustration" but that is not really what I want when I'm posting note cards with my paintings and drawings on them.

Hi Joyce,

I believe this topic has come up before and the

Collections >> Art & Architecture Category is what is used for that.

If you wish to request a Fine Art Category again, you might consider posting in the Category thread here:

This is where Mindy will look for consideration  Smiley

Thanks Doreen!  I will do that.  I guess I just figured the Art and Architecture category referred to well-known, existing art, as opposed to the card creator's personal art.......still learning as I go!! Smiley

I would not necessarily look in "Art & Architecture" for "Fine Art". I think the the category is too broad and should be split. Perhaps, "Fine Art" and then" Architecture".

Yes, I agree Jaqui.  GCU does SUCH a good job of providing categories, that I'm surprised this rather obvious one has been overlooked!

Yes, but that does not speak to me of fine art created by the card designer.  That makes me think of prints by famous artists.........all GCU needs to do is add "Fine Art" to the current list which includes Mosaic Art and Asian Art and Primitive Folk Art, etc.  Seems to me that Fine Art would be used a whole lot more than "mosaic art", which is a VERY specific and rather rare art form.  Why does THAT get its own category?  Makes no sense.....

Though I have what I call 'Fine Art', I don't actually put it here at GCU.  Fine Art these days has a wider definition to me in that a Fine Art Print is that which is archival.

Though I agree that Art and Architecture make no sense in being in the same category and I would love to see an ART category broken down by MEDIUM, I personally think that we should not call the cards on this site Fine Art.  I think it may at some point be another issue from a clueless customer who thinks they are buying Fine Art Cards when in fact they would be buying Non-Archival Cards with Fine Art printed on them.

Fine Art cards can be sold on Imagekind, Redbubble and so on where you are actually purchasing a greeting card with high quality inks and paper, usually archival.

I'd rather see Collections >> Art with subcategories for mediums and styles.

Just my 2-cents worth.

Good suggestions Doreen!  Makes sense to me!  I'd be happy with a simple ART category and then lots of different mediums as sub-categories!

Is there any other name for "fine art" such as traditional art or hand drawn or hands-on? I struggle with this when describing/differentiating my work for digital, for instance. My piece may simply be hand drawn but not really "fine" art. So what is "fine art" really? Can "fine art" be created on the computer?

Maybe just "art" is the best suggestion with sub-categories for painting, pencil drawing, crayon, color pencil water color, etc. Maybe that it too many subs???

I have made cards from paintings that I have sold in solo exhibitions and therefore I would call them 'Fine Art'.

But I would also welcome a category broken down by medium to differentiate 'traditionally' executed art from digital.

I have made photo cards that I have sold in galleries and exhibitions and I too would call them Fine Art Photography, however, in today's world the term 'Fine Art' refers more to an original or archival print than it does distinguishing Garfield from a Picasso.

IF this category is broken down into 'mediums', please also break down Digital.  Though there are those who do not consider a digital painting being an equal to a canvas painting (such as this which I assure you took time and brushstrokes, even though they were with a Pen and Tablet)

or this which is a digital pencil drawing:

These types of creations are much closer to 'traditional painting' than they are 'traditional digital art'.
Digital is now a term attached to anything created on a computer and that is no longer an accurate term

Creating a Digital Art category is okay, however within that category there needs to also be a breakdown such as; digital paintings, 3D, collages and so on.

Doreen - I'm afraid I can't entirely agree with your definition of 'Fine Art'.

Although the internet has encouraged 'globalisation', differences still exist between countries and continents. Maybe this is one of them. Certainly here in the UK, some of my cards would be described as 'fine art cards'. And some of our customers are from the UK!

As far as digital is concerned, in my opinion it's just another tool and could be broken down in just the same way as 'traditional painting' could be split into 'watercolours', 'acrylics', 'soft pastels' etc.

Hi Judy,

I'm sure you are correct that it is a U.S. thing and I hadn't thought of that.  I have watched the shift in thinking here in the gallery world of the states and it's sad, but true to find that Fine Art is not sought after the same way as it was 30-years ago.

Great point, thanks!
