Good Bye?
Feb 9th, 2011, 8:44am

Well, Lord knows I am not one to catch spelling errors, but I was making some goodbye cards and noticed the occasions>good bye/farewell category has a space in the word "goodbye."

I believe "goodbye" and "good-bye" are the only 2 correct spellings, with goodbye being preferred.  A number of cards (including the most popular one!) have it as "good bye." Huh

The origin of this word is Godbwye (1573) which is a contraction of "God be with you."

Bye: –noun Also, by.
1. Sports . in a tournament, the preferential status of a player or team not paired with a competitor in an early round and thus automatically advanced to play in the next round: The top three seeded players received byes in the first round.
2. Golf . the holes of a stipulated course still unplayed after the match is finished.
3. Cricket . a run made on a ball not struck by  the batsman.
4. something subsidiary, secondary, or out of the way.
–adjective
5. by1 .
—Idiom
6. by the bye, by the way; incidentally: By the bye, how do you spell your name? Also, by the by.
__________________________
Thus a "good bye" would be a beneficial advancement in a tournament. (For instance.)
I believe you are correct Tom. Goodbye is the preferred, but it seems that good-bye is acceptable.

I didn't know the origin was derived from "God be with you" so fair play for the info Tom
