Simple poetry
Jan 14th, 2011, 11:50am

Every now and then I find I have to come up with a poetic verse for my cards (not my favorite part of this process).  I have a question for those of you that do a lot more poetry than I do.  When you do include original poetry in your card, do you put your name on it as you would if it were a quote - as you would if you used a verse and where giving credit to the author.

I have been wondering the same thing myself. Hopefully someone can answer this for us. Smiley

Hello ladies...

Well, for me I don't add my name because I created the card and write the words for all my cards, therefore unless otherwise stated (via using a quote or poem from someone else where I give credit), I assume the public knows its my words.  To me it seems sort of a 'duh' moment that unless I am giving credit to someone else, the words are mine as is the art.

Rita, I am a poet and if it were my card and I did the poetry, then no. If it was a poem by someone else and I was allowed to use it, then yes. If I let someone use a poem that I created, I would want them to give me credit for writing the poem, even if there was or wasn't pay involved. Giving someone credit for their work is pay in a sense, too. It advertises their work and name. If you didn't want to put their name on the inside of your card, you should ask them if it is ok if you give them credit in the author's details about the card. To some, that may be good enough. I hope this helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. I would be more than happy to help you out on any poetry problems that you may have with your cards. I specialize in rhyming poetry.  Wink

Rita,
As a published poet, I find this a sticky one also.  What I settled on was (like Doreen) I believe one should realize that the card contents are mine unless otherwise stated.  The one exception I make is:  When my card front image contains my poetic verse, I do put my name after it; usually in an unobtrusive, smaller font.
PS Just keep writing the verse form and I'll bet you will come to love it.   Wink

Thanks everyone for the input.  Guess I should have specified in the beginning, I was talking about the poetry being part of the front of the card and not the inside verse.  It's not that I'm worried about anyone stealing my words (they aren't that good) but if someone where to "borrow" them it would be fun to see my name attached to them.
