oooh, I'm going to jump in here quick to give you some thoughts on this.  I saw info on the Maltese cross on that one link. Wipe all that out of your head as no one will know what it means on a card. Firefighters have "badges", nurses have pins.

Here's a short idea on what a pinning is.
It's an old tradition or ritual, so to speak. It is done at programs/colleges, etc. as a way to acknowledge the nursing graduates in their own private dignified more personal ceremony away from the craziness of graduation day. Usually held in the days shortly before the graduation, it is a symbolic passage into being a nurse. (Florence Nightingale pledge, awards, candle lighting with pins, etc) Anyone that has gone to an Honor Society induction ceremony...it's similar to that. Usually led by the professors/instructors/admin, short speeches are given -often of a goodbye, good luck and stay ethical variety, candles are lit usually with short pledges made by the grads and followed by professors/instructors lighting candles with their own go forth into the nursing world pledges or statements. small nursing pins are  presented by the professors/instructors and now many times, a family member or friend will "pin" the grad. Blessings given, goodbyes said.  Nursing programs are often times, notoriously grueling with much emotional growth along the way. The ceremony and following dinner/luncheon/gathering kinda closes all that, if that makes any sense. You say your goodbyes to your professors and your loved ones join in and meet/greet all the people you've been praising or complaining about.   Grin

The pins have generally taken on a small round medallion appearance with the nursing school crest on it (google brings many up and when you see them you'll say "oh those, i've seen them" on some nurse ID badges or lapels). Not all grads join in as you "buy" your pin often times so Pinning Congrats cards are not appropriate for all grads.  You get sucked in because you want to but generally you don't HAVE to participate as a grad. Then again, people probably won't be looking for such cards unless directly involved such as close relatives or friends. You don't usually have a big invite type party as graduation is happening simultaneously. These are my experiences, yours may vary. Yes, I've been in two Pin Ceremonies as I'm a nurse too.

Final thoughts in designing.....think symbolic, ritual, tradition, religious if in a catholic university, etc, candlelighting, florence nightingale honor and ethics, passage into being a nurse. Think taking another step from being student nurse to graduate nurse before Nursing boards and licensure and becoming an LPN or RN or whatever terminology a state uses.

Glad it helped..just noticed one other thing. I know what they're getting at with the Trade/Vocational subheading but don't use those terms in your cards in regards to nurses.  Probably no one would use the subheading breakdown to search for nurse so that's fine.  Nursing is considered "professional".  Six+ years of college and a license tell me so. Shocked)  Best to leave all of the above adjectives out.
