Warped images
Dec 20th, 2010, 7:36am

Hi,

I am uploading in a very primative manner - scanning to My Pictures and then uploading from there to GCU. I tried to use the GCU template but can't open it with my computer. My problem is that most of my artwork looks OK but every so often the image looks warped - kind of elongated - and I'm sure it is something to do with the way I am uploading.

Can anyone give me some very simple, not too computer technical advice to correct this problem?

Thanks! Huh

The 5x7 card format means that the long side needs to be 40% more pixels than the short side.
The template short side uses 1500 pixels thus making the long side 1.4x times that, which is 2100 pixels.

Make sure your uploaded image use exactly this relationship between the short and the long side, otherwise it will be stretched to fit, and not look as good.

I love your cards!  Nice work!

It is very difficult to help in non computer terms without knowing what software you are using. If you are just using scanner software that probably came with your scanner it's probably not going to offer the flexibility of the tasks that need to be done. Working with borders and layouts is going to be difficult. Having said that...

Most scanner software lets you draw a box then scan. If you have done this, more than likely that's what is warping your images. It's trying to fit the entire image in that box. Every scanner is different but the concept is usually the same.
1. Place object to be scanned on scanner (assuming its a flat bed).
2. Preview scan
3. Then draw your box to define area to be scanned (you can scan the entire platen if want but you'll have to crop later.)
4. Scan the object (CGU Wiki states 300 dpi).
5. Initiate scan.

Always preview. That's the key.

The bleed area is 1/4 inch all the way around the 5x7 dimensions. That makes the final image 1500 x 2100 pixels at 300 dpi. Make sure that all essential elements of the design do not extend past the 1/4 inch area.

Scanning software has options and you'll just have to get to know your software. If the above doesn't help you may have an option checked or a setting that is warping your images.
