Order received
Dec 10th, 2010, 10:15am

And somewhat disappointed  embarrassed

Let me start by saying that the package arrived earlier than expected. Packaging was perfect, folding too and same goes for the back of the card.

But... the smell is terrible! My cats, always curious, started sneezing after sniffing at the cards and apparently it's that strong that they don't go near the cards anymore (which by itself is a good thing Tongue)
After holding the cards I had to wash my hands several times before I dared to touch food. It's a chemical smell which doesn't go away (made me lightheaded) - those of you who have smelled it will know what I mean.

To be able to compare the glossy cards, I ordered the same cards from GCU and Zazzle. Where the surface of the Zazzle cards is smooth, the GCU cards look like someone has been using a blowdryer on high speed to dry them. They're all 'rippled'. Not deep ripples, but clearly not as smooth as the Zazzle cards.

I've put the cards in the open air in the shed - can't stand to have them in the house - and I truly hope the bad smell will fade away as I have to send them soon.

Hi, Antoinette-

Thanks for the feedback. We're still having a lot of questions about the smell issue. It seems that some artists are commenting about a bad smell and some are saying there is no smell, all from the same day's orders. There have been changes over the past few months, but we have been on the same coating for awhile now. I'm hoping we get more feedback on this thread so that we can judge the across the board issues.

On the smoothness, I am checking with our operators today to verify the settings and to check the evenness of the coating.

Again, thanks for the feedback!

Yes, its sad but true
Clearly GCU printer is still learning and sometimes gets it right and sometimes does not.

For that reason I don't like to post a permanent negative forum comment  on a transient problem
because I am sure they will get it right . I wish this post would vanish soon after gCU reading

We have received several orders of multiple cards recently from GCU, nearly perfect with no spell on cards , printed 1 day before we received  them. At the same time others reported smells .
Sometimes cards are great, sometimes less than GCU goals.

We use entirely gloss finishes with blacks and intense color and recently purchase cards from GCU and Zazzle  and there is a difference.

I will  gladly mail samples of same card images from both to GCU so they may share with printer and help them understand, learn and deliver the best possible card.

its best for printer to see with their eyes whats going on and learn
I know GCU and all the artist want the BEST

i noted that zazzle and GCU use different card papers and this might effect printing
GCU uses a grayer recycled paper, while Z has whiter non recycled paper.

there is also traditionally a sizing issue with designs because  GCU somehow stretches our 5x7 images and then sometimes has wide cut lines. Our 5x7 design prints and is cut perfectly on Z, while on GCU cards  images are clearly stretched, lighter, bigger and cut lines vary and sometimes crop

its best for printer to see with their eyes whats going on and learn
I know GCU and all the artist want the BEST and i will gladly contributed to their learning

Thanks for your reply Jason, I appreciate it.
I've been reading the different posts about this subject and it struck me that some people notice the smell and others don't. Weird, isn't it?
Edit: My order date was November 27th and ship date Nov 29th, if that is of any help.

Let me emphasize that I think the printing is awesome, the colours on the cards are exactly as I created them - it's just the coating that seems to be giving problems. I know that you're working on a solution and I have every confidence that the problem will be solved.

David, not every forum member stops by on a daily basis, so I think the posts should stay.
Yes, there's a problem, yes they're working on it, but in the meantime people should be able to post about it and give feedback, so I hope GCU will leave the posts where they are!

Stinky-poo !

Third time writing regarding this subject, I am quite bummed about the horrible smell ! Yes a BIG Tongue

I too have had to wash my hands after touching the cards.  The smell stays on your hands - a very bad chemical varnish smell.

Additionally, as stated before - I ordered over 3 dozen of my holiday cards to send as a promotion of my work.  I'm so very disappointed with this awful smell from the cards.  It is a negative promotion resulting in a loss of sales and a waste of my money and time.

poopers.

I just ordered 10 of my own Christmas cards without the glossy finish, we will see how it turns out. I will let you all know as soon as I know, myself. Cross your fingers! I just didn't want to take a chance on the glossy seeing how I really need to send these out to family members. This is the first cards I have ordered here. Hope it's a good first impression.  undecided

P.S. I have switched all my cards over to the matte finish in my store. I do not want to take any chances on my customers being unhappy with my cards and thinking it is my fault in any way. If this issue is resolved, I will change those that were glossy back.

the smell issue is very strange.
All of our cards are printed in glossy and i had cards shipped on nov 29 and nov 30  and there was no smell on any of the cards we had mailed.

on the 29 Antinette had cards printed that smelled

I have previously received cards with the smell , but the last 2 batches had no smell to them and we live local to the printer and get them next day after mailing.

SO, even cards mailed the same day have a variation in smell

Tanya-
You mentioned this is the third time writing about this issue. Just checking, are your concerns all from the same order, or are you having smell issues with three different orders?

Hi Jason,

Smiley Thank you for addressing my communications, I'm responding to your question.

I have written 3 times regarding the smelly cards of 2 different orders/shipment dates.

- order No. 395684  mailed on Nov 24, 2010
- order No. 397343  mailed on Nov 28, 2010

I also notice, the Vertical cards are cut off at the bottom (interfering with the text), whereas the Horizontal shaped card is fine.

PS - you look so young for a print manager, you must be a baby-genius !  Parents must be proud !

I finally ordered some of my cards, all glossy. When they arrived, I was very pleased overall. That bears repeating: I really was pleased overall. I ordered 28, and on all the fold was fine (no cracking), the colors were accurate and rich, and the borders were trimmed accurately on all 3 sides. The order # was 3100.403457, on 12/06/10.

The cards have, however, a slightly unpleasant , chemical smell. Not so strong as to make me not send them, but strong enough to make me worry about it. I have a feeling that the cards will be admired from arm's length away, instead of close up, and that's too bad. For any recipient who may have chemical sensitivities, the cards will likely get tossed.

I also do not care for the "orange peel" texture to the cards. I used to be a print buyer for a prominent ad agency, so I acknowledge I'm more critical than the recipients of my cards will be, but the "spray on" look to the finish combined with the chemical odor make the cards fall just a bit short of the top quality mark.

That said, I am confident that we all can look forward to continued refinement as the GCU printing partner addresses these issues.

Regards,
Pat

Denise-
See the reply in the message thread. Sorry for the delay, had to get it right before I gave you instruction.

Patricia-
The orange peel texture has been largely removed. Offline coating (as we do for this process) does have a minor texture but it had gotten out of hand. We have changed tolerances and you shouldn't see heavy texturing any longer. As always, we continue to search for a lower-scent alternative to the coating. This is uv gloss coating, inherently a chemical, but we are working with our vendors to find a better alternative regarding smell. It will be a bit before you see this in production cards, as you have all seen the problems that occur when we production test on live orders.
In short, we're working on it! I appreciate all your feedback and patience.

Jason

PS Thanks for all the cute notes about the pic. That's my amazingly cute (if I do say so myself) four-month-old son Bennett.

Hi Jason,

I have been following Denise's question about color profile and can not find your response.  Could you or Denise put a link here so I can get her questioned answered for my own sake?

Thanks...and you are right, Bennett is amazingly cute!  Congratulations papa!  Your first?

Can anyone tell me how long it is supposed to take to get your cards? I ordered mine on Dec. 10th hoping to get them in time to send them out before Christmas, but it doesn't look like they are going to make it. It's been 11 days today.  cry

I just tead this whole thread.  Marie got her order today we ordered last week. prompt mailing, gorgeous printing.  But!!!!! the smell is horrible!!!  We have had them in the kitchen window all day with the window open.  I didn't want her to send them the smell is still strong, but she's mailing them in the morning, from the north-midwest to east coast.  Hope they don't still smell when they get there.  What really has me worrird though is I had GCU mail mine and they were mailed Saturday.  One going to my sister-in-law in Indiana who is in her mid-eighties, with asthma, and frail health.  I thought this issue had been addressed and taken care of?
