Taking a Stand Regarding Correct Spelling
Nov 29th, 2010, 4:54pm

I feel that I am forced to post this message because there is no other way for me to convey this to GCU. I have in the past written support without getting any sort of reply or knowledge of receipt via email. So, here is the facts of an event...

Just today, I received a "Return for Edits". The reviewer's request was "Please change everyday to every [space] day on your inner verse".

The word is perfectly fine as it was.

I checked 3 dictionaries both online and in my personal library.

I'm appalled at myself for doing what they asked even though I know I am correct. This very event says a lot about artists who are just doing what they are asked to try to get cards approved. I am guilty of this. If I'm doing this, there must be more artists out there. After all approval times are running around 2 1/2 weeks.

I am also appalled that I was asked to change this in the first place since customers can customize the inner verse. Both spellings of the phrase is correct. Honestly, does it really matter that I chose to use a combination word instead of two words?

Because of this ridiculous request I am now NOT going to do what they say anymore just to get cards approved when I know that I am correct. Although it should not be up to the artists to defend correct spelling. If the reviewer is in doubt they should use the dictionary. That's what writers, artists, and contributors do. That's how people learn.

I encourage other artists/contributors to take a stand when they are correct. Don't just implement what the reviewer says to get approval. If the reviewer is wrong tell them!

GCU as a company should be aware of what their reviewers are requesting as part of the quality control process.

It's more a grammar than a spelling issue...can't really comment unless we see the word in the context that it was used. But sometimes, yes it is just easier to make the change and then if you really want to after approval you can change it back. Saves time in the long run.

I suspect the reviewer was using this from dictionary:
"USAGE The adjective everyday, 'pertaining to every day, ordinary,' is correctly spelled as one word ( : carrying out their everyday activities), but the adverbial phrase every day, meaning 'each day,' is always spelled as two words ( : it rained every day)."

So correctness does depend on how it is used.  I am always grateful when reviewers find one of my grammar or spelling errors.  If I have had an issue with what the reviewer suggests, I do a direct reply email and have always received a response back from them within a few days and sometimes on the very same day.

Sorry to hear your frustration and hope you hear back soon from your reviewer.

Thanks for the grammar tip it pointed me in the right direction. I concede that the reviewer's request makes more sense even thought it could go either way.

In the future I will be more careful, and I will take a stand when I think I am correct.

I think that I got a little irked because the previous email was requesting image use when I am the copyright owner. This has happened more than once.

As Cheryl said, it is a matter of how the word is being used. "Everyday" is an adjective and thus is usually followed by a noun (e.g. everyday clothes). In the phrase "every day", "every" is the adjective and "day" is the noun so is not followed by another noun. So the context is important to decide which you use. However, having said that, not only can the customer make changes, but also the writer's words, for example in a poem, are sometimes written without attention to grammar. After all, a poem is a form of art and should be up to the discretion of the poet. On the other hand, professionalism is important to presentation (if in this case the reviewer is correct), so I can see both sides of the issue.

Sorry for your frustrations...

"Sending you warm wishes and cheer everyday." is incorrect
"Sending you warm wishes and cheer every day." is correct.

GCU will not approve cards with incorrect spelling nor grammar in the best interest of all parties - the shopper, artist and GCU.  It will either lead to no sale or a returned sale in which case no one benefits.

I concede that I was wrong -- I was actually frustrated with other return for edits and just picked on the wrong card. The action that I should have picked on was returning for edits an inner verse that had already used the specific word that the reviewer was asking for. I emailed the reviewer and politely asked that they provide more details in what they were looking for. I even asked if it might be a software glitch, because maybe they weren't viewing the same thing that I was.

I haven't received a reply yet, but it has only been not quite 2 working days.

In the future I will be much more careful in proofing. I understand that mistakes can be made from both sides.
