My last batch of cards were Christmas cards for family (glossy, no black ink but DULL !!!), plus a card I had done for a friend (digital art) that arrived cracked and peeling where there should have been black ink.  Looked hideous in a matt frame!

That wasn't so bad, but two days later that same card sold to someone I don't know... and I hate to think what they will get.

I just ordered some extra Christmas cards with NO black hoping they will look better.  But I have to say the new printing leaves a lot to be desired.  DULL and the colours seem to be off - I use a lot of bright colours.

While I know they are looking into this, it does not bode well for people buying cards NOW for the holiday season does it?  Luckily mine will go to family who have not paid for them, but I would be really annoyed if I received the same thing after paying for it.

PLEASE get your printers to do some in depth research on what is obviously THEIR problem!

Prior to this I have nothing but the highest praise for the quality of the cards sent and ordered myself.!

I received my first order from GCU on Monday. The quality was amazing!    I was pleased to find no color issues, odor, flaking, or cut-off logos. Both the matte and the glossy cards were just beautiful. I was a little stunned actually, after reading about the many printer problems here on the forum. I just thought I would let everyone know about my experience, and that there IS hope!!!  Smiley  Cheesy  Wink

Received my 25 cards today...

I too received my Christmas Card order today and the printing is lovely, the smell is barely noticeable (all glossy cards), the folds are good...

HOWEVER...

The cutoff logo is on ALL of them.  It really is ridiculous.  I stopped printing my own cards for a more professional look and because of the logo being cutoff, they all look like a home-printing job.  I have done layout for publishing for years and find it VERY HARD to understand why the layout on the Vertical cards has not been tweaked to correct for this.

Somebody, somewhere created the layout for the back of these cards.  I bought my own cards and those of 2 other artists.  We all have square logos which is ideal, yet all of them were cutoff on the portrait cards.  PLEASE correct this, it simply can not be a major ordeal!  There is plenty of empty space above the logo and store info to bump it up enough so that it won't be cut off.

This IS NOT a printing issue, its a layout issue.

That sucks Doreen.. Such an important element to the card too.  I have been wondering why they just don't revamp the back of the cards to ensure a more than safe spacing for printing...  I have a terrible habit of always assuming people in business are way ahead of everyone else in problem solving for their own businesses, especially when other peoples businesses are involved..  Perhaps that is the case here and they are revamping the layout for soon to be and just did not mention it.    Could be that Triptophan induced coma stuff again.

Interesting..   I never felt the need to be aware of so many things on the POD sites all these years before.  I am certainly learning a lot here about these topics.

Same here with logo area too close to the margin. I, too have been in the graphic design/publishing business for many years. The one thing I made very sure of is to design the elements that are close to margins even farther away as to ensure that "printer error" during trimming wouldn't happen. It doesn't matter what kind of document....cards, forms, business cards....whatever.... mistakes can happen. BUT...when we (GCU) have the SAME printer with the same card specifications...the original GCU designer for the back of the card should RE-design to allow for bad trimming.

just my 4 cents...elizabeth

This is not good news....On November 15th I posted about the logo issue complete with a photo of the cut off logo.  I also sent the same information and photo directly to Shaun as per his request.  Over two weeks ago!  What gives???  This is very disturbing!

I think it is a shame that they do exactly what they tell us not to do.  Cheesy

After all, their part in creating the card is only the back, and if they get the placement of things right for one, it's right for all. How simple!

We are the ones who should be worried about this. If they can't get it right, what does that say for us ever creating perfect cards?

Why can't GCU come up with some kind of submission setup like Zazzle has? They show you exactly where the images should go to avoid being cut off. I have thought this was very unprofessional since I first started here. You just don't leave room for errors like this in a business. It makes GCU look bad as well as the artist, when a customer gets cards with images cut off.

Is there not anything you can do GCU to make it all an easier process for all of us? Please????????????

"our part" is actually much more complicated.  Would be nice if it was that simple though  Smiley.

That said we are looking into the issue with the way your logos are printing on the vertical cards.  I thought the programmers had made some adjustments after Linda's comments in mid-november, but it's obviously still an issue and we'll be looking into it.

I received my Christmas card order a couple of days ago and not to beat a dead horse, but they are not very good quality.
I have tried to air them out like others have said but they smell really strong still.  Also they are not folded evenly and the logo/info on the bottom nearly chopped off.  I have no issues with the colors or cracking or peeling, but from what I've read here I am afraid that might happen over time.
For the past few years I have ordered my cards from another POD and have never had issues like this. All my cards from there are glossy as well with no smell.
This is the first time I have ordered from here and I truly hope that the programing issues for the logo and the Printer issues are resolved.  This quality is not good for anyone.

My name is Jason Tempestini and I am the VP of Operations at AMP Printing,
the official printer for Greeting Card Universe.  We have been following
your commentary closely, and in recent conversations with GCU have decided
to join the forum and discussions. We hope to provide quick feedback to any
printing issues as well as an open channel to the printer to allow folks to
give us direct input.

A short bit about AMP Printing. We are one of the largest commercial
printers in the San Francisco Bay Area. We've been putting ink on paper for
31 years and have seen many changes to the industry. We are constantly
adapting to our changing market and we have become a leader in high-quality
offset lithography, color management, green printing, grand format printing
and digital printing. We are great believers in handling the entire project
in-house so we include complete letterpress, bindery, finishing and
fulfillment services.

In response to the UV coating issues, please know that we have been working
diligently since the issue first came to light in September. We had made a
change in our coating to a more environmentally friendly option in keeping
with our mission as a green printer. Although this and all of our printing
projects are carefully QC'd before packing, in delivery, unfortunately, this
coating did not perform as well as we had hoped. We discontinued the use of
this coating and have since been working with a few alternative to find the
best mix of gloss, adhesion performance and, at your prompting, scent
reduction.

The UV coating we are now using on the cards (which has, I noticed, received
good marks in the forum) is our best ever. This is a no-VOC coating
specially formulated for us to reduce smell. It goes well with the FSC paper
we use and, we believe, provides the best reproduction of your beautiful
cards.

Again, thank you so much for the comments that you continue to make. We
enjoy (and often copy and tape up) the positive feedback. We also pay close
attention to your notes encouraging us to improve. As with the UV coating
scent issue, your feedback helps to make us a better printer. We appreciate
the opportunity to print your cards, and we look forward to working and
talking with all of you in the future.

Thank you Jason, for all your input and feedback regarding your end of the printing process.  We sure do hope you can fix the recent problems of chipping, as well as the odor on the cards, as soon as possible.

The smell on the cards I ordered last month (30+ cards) was really awful.  I could barely stand the smell as I was writing out the cards.  It actually was starting to give me a headache.   I can only imagine how bad that odor is for your workers to inhale every day as well.  So I am glad to hear you are searching for improvements to that problem.
