Christmas dukes it out!
Nov 19th, 2010, 5:38am

I just got a return (with many more coming I can see) because I used Christmas cactus to describe a Christmas cactus on a variety of cards.  The reviewer knows this is a plant, but feels it will mislead christmas card shoppers into viewing my cards.  Well, that works BOTH ways- people who are looking for christmas cactus will be taken to Christmas cards!........I appreciate what you are trying to accomplish, but a Christmas cactus (in my view) is a very special bloom, and would be attractive to flower lovers.  I feel it is unfair to penalize MY cards because they are not "Christmas" .  I hope that someone will look at this again and reconsider.  The card that was returned is 715015
There are MANY more pending with the same image and tag "Christmas cactus".

Thank you for looking into it...

Hi Trish

The Christmas Cactus among my family has always been there, we got one for the Mother-In-Law all dressed last year... oddly I know but here in Northumberland it also seems part of Christmas as they are all tinselly and glittery.

It could be a lot of people do not have them as Christmas gifts, and as a Child on christmas my now dead favorite Aunt give me a cutting off hers in a cute Christmas Pot.

I did know though about this:

The Christmas cactus history sheds light on how this plant became such an integral part of Christmas festivities. Pine and fir trees are evergreens and are normally found in cold climates. The cold and harsh winter conditions dull the spirit of many and an evergreen bough or tree warmly decorated puts the mind on a more cheerful frame. But there are several countries where pine and fir trees are not available. So the custom of decorating the Christmas cactus as Christmas tree came into being. We find this tradition in the dry and hot places. Africa, Australia, some of the Latin American countries has Christmas cactus for their Christmas tree. The tree is decorated just like pine or fir trees, but there are local or rather, native flowers or any other decorative items.

But I don't think that everyone would know this, perhaps as a new ask to the review teem,
they truly are good if you discuss it with them Smiley

In my family we have always had the Christmas Cactus as part of our holiday festivities.   They are well known for their colorful blooms in holiday colorings that often open during the winter holidays.  My Mother uses them as center pieces on her dinner table.  Its common name is Christmas cactus and I would think that would be the key words used if looking here for that type of image..    It is what it is and that's the name most people call it..   Interesting to see how this one ends up.. Good luck..

Hey Trish,

Well I too was raised here in California with Christmas cactus commonly used as gifts and decorations.  Out of curiosity, I did a GCU search for Christmas cactus and many came up...

all of those artists used keywords of both Christmas and cactus, but NOT Christmas cactus so maybe you can do that with your keywords and they certainly will come up in a search with all these other cards...

list keywords as:  Christmas, cactus  instead of:  Christmas cactus

Or am I missing the whole point?  I've only had a couple sips of coffee this morning  Grin

I did a GCU search for Christmas Cactus and only came up with 50 cards, all featuring only Christmas cactus and other cactus.  If you enclosed Christmas Cactus with commas in your tags, it shouldn't be an issue.  The Christmas cactus is a definite bright spot in the Christmas season, and it would be a shame if customers couldn't find cards featuring these beautiful plants if you aren't allowed to tag them.  Ours are blooming now!   Grin

Hi Doreen, I used Christmas cactus, cactus, so as not to mislead, and didn't do 'christmas', as I felt that was misleading, so I am hoping that I can keep my tags as is because I feel I will lose alot of sales.  (ok, that is wishful thinking, hahahahahaha

I really appreciate everyones input............and it's my dear Mother in laws plant, so it is extra special!

I had no problems getting my 'Christmas Spider Orchid' through, and this isn't associated anywhere near as much with Christmas as is the 'Christmas Cacti'.

I'm no "green thumb" and my only house plant is a "Christmas cactus,"  had it for five years and it blooms every November, reminding it's time to start Christmas shopping (yeah, like REALLY)  Anyway, I believe it is a symbolic flower of much more than just the Christmas season, it's a symbol of hope, faith and patience, that despite "dry" times and hard times there will always be another bloom, more beautiful than the last. . . a surprise in the "grey time" of early winter. . . perhaps good in the encouragement category. . .  just my thoughts.

Hey Trish,,,well done.  So glad that your delightful cards are approved.  This sort of posting/issue just reminds us of how fabulous it is to be a part of the solution for this site...and now if only the approval process can be, sped up....I dislike sending customers to another POD.  I celebrate the exquisite job GCU does, support this site, but I do have an issue with approvals.  I have been with GCU for a couple if not few years.  "Back in the day" cards were approved oh so quickly...there were @ 1,000 artists at that time.  Now GCU has grown in artists and uploaded cards...I wonder if GCU has increased it's approval staff to support the growth?  I will soon get off my soap box...but it does annoy me that cards are being referred to other sites when they could easily be purchased here.  I have referred clients to another site...I don't want to do that...I wish to be loyal to this site...I fear that my request here is falling on "Back burner, muted ears" Angry
