Category Pop Up Box Suggestion
Oct 22nd, 2010, 10:16am

I would like to make a suggestion during the selecting a category process of submitting a new card.  Something similar was added to a stock site I use and it was very helpful during the submission process.  I'm not sure this will help on every category GCU offers, but it may be worth it to use on the ones it will.  My hope by this suggestion is to help both artists make the right selection upfront and cut down the emails by reviewers for resubmits.  Then perhaps we can speed up and move the review process along more quickly.  Smiley

For those categories that we can only select one "specific" choice for a card, could we have a little pop up box come up that states this to the artist.  THIS IS THE ONLY CATEGORY UNDER BIRTHDAY THAT CAN BE SELECTED BECAUSE IT IS A SPECIFIC CARD!  By this showing during the submission process it will help artists to make the correct choice.  This little pop up won't slow down the artists whom already know they can only make one "specific" choice, but it will be there for those who need the reminder.  Smiley

EXAMPLE 1:
Let's say, I have a, "Happy Birthday Mom" card and am posting it in the Birthday-Relationship Specific-Mother category.  I select this category and then a little pop up box comes up that states, THIS IS THE ONLY CATEGORY UNDER "BIRTHDAY" THAT CAN BE SELECTED BECAUSE IT IS A SPECIFIC CARD!

EXAMPLE 2:
Let's say, I made a card that says, "Happy Birthday Mom on your 50th Birthday.
Artists may be unsure if they can put it in Birthday-Age Specific AND Birthday-Mom-Age Specific.
* So let's say the artist selects Birthday-Relationship Specific-Mother-Age Specific which is the correct choice.  Once that category is selected a pop up box would come up and say something like, THIS IS THE ONLY CATEGORY UNDER "BIRTHDAY" THAT CAN BE SELECTED BECAUSE IT IS A SPECIFIC CARD TO MOTHER!
* Next the artist may think it is okay to put the card in a second category, such as, Birthday-Age Specific (which is the wrong category).  So if they select this category a pop up box would state, "IF CARD IS FOR FRIEND-PARENT-FAMILY RELATIONS AND AGE SPECIFIC, IT DOESN'T GO HERE!

I hope you get the idea.  This idea wouldn't work for all categories, but may start to weed down some of the problem areas that arise during the category selection process.  It will hopefully cut down the resubmits from reviewers.

Just a thought.  What do you think?

Hi Sheryl,

I get your idea and think it's brilliant!  I don't know how difficult this would be for the techie gurus, but I agree that something along this line would reduce a fair amount of errors when submitting and second your suggestion for putting it on the Wish List  Wink

That sounds like a good idea. I sometimes wonder if it is appropriate for a card to be in one category or two.

Thank you both for your comments and support.  I just hope if GCU would consider implementing something like this, that it won't be too difficult to get done.

Perhaps they can start slow with a few categories and see how it goes.  Then add more to other categories.

I believe we have all wondered at one time or another, which card category or categories to choose.  Smiley

Nice one Sheryl,

That would have been so handy when I started.  Being a newbie I kept digging around trying to find categories and adding some incorrect ones to my cards. Even now I have to keep familiarizing myself with all the categories.

I think this idea could be a winner!

I think it is a great idea for here.  I use "pop ups" in my stores for staff while ringing things up as a reminder for other things they should do at that time also and it has been very beneficial to us all.  I had a programming guru friend add the P-U ability to our fairly complex - custom designed software used for multiple locations and he did so in under an hour.  Very impressive I thought and I have never had any issues with it.  I think it made things flow better and it certainly increased sales and time per customer too.  So.. I think it is sure worth trying if GCU thinks at all possible here..  Saves time which usually means it saves money..  Every little step helps for sure.  Great idea Sheryl!

Let me clarify that he only gave it the ability to have P-U's.. We had to take the time to add the proper message to each code etc.  That took a bit of time but after a bit.. It was done.  Now we add them as we create new codes so it is fairly easy once caught up.. Smiley

Sheryl...a great idea and thank you for your suggestion on how to make things easier for artists and the reviewers.

It certainly makes sense to build logic into the category choices themselves.  I do suspect however that this will be a big job for programming to build & maintain all of this logic.  It also assumes that the artist finds the correct category so the rules the p/u mentions really do apply to their card.

In general I like where you're going.  We can certainly take baby steps in this direction.

Thank you, it is excellent food for thought  Smiley

Thank you Mindy for considering this idea.  We like baby steps.  And thank you to the artists who commented above.

Perhaps they could put a little green pop up box for things that are acceptable to the category and a little red pop up box for things that would not be acceptable to the category.

Now I'll stop before the programmers really hate me.  LOL  I'll send them some cookies if they can do it.   Grin

Thanks again Mindy for taking this into consideration.  I really appreciate it.
