Invitation Wording
Sep 6th, 2010, 7:27am

Received the following comment from reviewer:

"We advise artists to have fill in text ........................ or ____________________ instead of (name), (date), etc because some card customers purchase the cards as-is and fill them in by hand at home. Please make this adjustment to all approved cards. Thank you!"

Please advise.... is this the general format you want on all invitations?  If so, please put it in the wiki and let all artist know.

Thank you.

Oh, oh.... that is VERY important info!  I have been doing the (name), (date), etc.  Have sold a ton of invitations and was assuming they were doing the filling in.  The blank lines were too vague I thought.  Might as well leave the inside completely blank.  I also think the "lines" make it look 'store bought' and by having the customer customize it themselves without the lines showing, makes it look professionally done.  But that's just me!

I don't know why leaving fill in area blank is much different than the lines_________________.

Customers know that they will be filling in the information, whether they do so at home on the line, as they would a store bought card, or by having the blank to add their own handwritten information instead.

However, GCU is in touch with people with their comments, etc, so I assume they have more information than we do.  I would think that the _________________ process encourages the customer to think they need to fill it in at home rather than take out the line and add the text in before purchasing.

My 2 cents!

This is confusing - now what do they want us to do?
I've been working on my cupcake galore age spec. series, 1 - 110 invitations all summer. I'm actually up to 101 and haven't had any comment from the reviewers -that i've been doing it wrong -to date.

I've been putting on the inside message part:

For:
Date:
Time:
Place:
given by:
RSVP:

With the idea that the customer can either personalize with their party details or buy and fill in later.

Awhile back we were told not to put lines in or write put in your details here on the inside message part. -so I don't. Are you saying that we should put lines in Now? I do have in my Artists' note section a bit about the design and "Please fill in your own Party details" As I said very confusing.

Diana-- I think even though you don't actually put a visible line after "date" it is assumed.
What Kathleen was referring to, I think, is those of use who insert dialog and with (date) where the customer has to erase the insert(date) and put in their own information.
Does this make sense??????? undecided

Thanks for sharing this with us Kathleen.  I think it makes perfect sense considering unlike Zazzle, GCU cards do not have templates to be filled in by customers, so creating them like those in a department store where you buy a pack of invitations and fill in the blanks at home seems best to me.  I think that is how I've made mine, but now I will go take a look and make corrections if needed.

Thanks for passing the info on  Smiley

Doreen-- I've been able to personalize all of mine when I buy them myself.  Assume the customer has the same privilege.  In fact, I can add to the top side, plus the bottom section.
But I can only insert text in the middle section.  Only when I become a 'customer' are the other 2 sections open for editing.

Hi all... thanks for responding.

Yes, it does make sense to make invitations so customer can write in info if they would like.  I guess I have always assumed they would fill out their own invitation on line.  We do need some specific guidelines, as I have done them many different ways and the guidelines would help us be more consistent and save much editing time.  I'm assuming the reason the reviewer brought it up is that they have had some invitations ordered without on line personalization and they had to be returned.

Sometimes I have it like this

(name) is turning (age)
Let's celebrate

or

Please join us in celebrating
(name)'s (age) birthday

and when I do it that way I put the other information in parentheses to be consistent:
(date)
(time)
(place)
Hosted by (name)
RSVP to (name)
at (phone or email)
by (date)

Hi Nan...yes I understand that the customer can customize the inside.  I think the point from the reviewer is that not all customers do that.  Many purchase the cards and wish to hand-write them at home after they receive them.  That's all I was getting at.

I'm guessing here, but I bet the 'average' customer at GCU, who IS NOT sending the card directly to someone else at the time of purchase, does not customize the inside online.  Just my guess   Grin

I see your point....
I wish someone from GCU would jump in here and tell us what we should be doing.  I feel like I'm flying by the seat of my pants!

I'm here!  No need to panic...took the day off yesterday but back in action  Cool

The guideline for invitations and any cards for that matter is that there cannot be any instructional text that the shopper would HAVE TO change online before printing.  This is along the lines of our guideline for no instructional text, see here:
http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/forum/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1205873269/0#0

We have had many shoppers purchase invitations as is.

So..however you like to do it with either blank lines or field labels are ok just NO stand in/place holder text.

OK:
Date:
Time:
Date: __________________
Time: __________________
On ______________ for ________________ at ________________.

NOT OK:
Join us on (date) for (name) birthday party!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Mindy.
It's going to take me a while to get all of mine edited as I have quite a few that were approved earlier with parentheses. But will keep working on it.
