Re:: Approval Process

Ok - I am not trying to complain. I am new and I have to say that I was quite excited about trying to sell my cards on Greeting Card Universe. I had heard good things about this site - in regards to they are giving Hallmark a run for their money because they offer a large selection of unique cards here.

But, I have to say - the approval process really does need tweeking. I am ok with waiting a few days to have my cards approved. But, I have cards sitting there that have been sitting there almost 2 weeks. I am thinking if I upload christmas holiday cards now - they might just be approved before the holidays? I think it needs to be addressed that the approval process needs to be improved that it doesn't take so long for cards to go through the approval process. This is going to be a real turn off for me. And will be a real turn off to other sellers/artists/designers who want to list here. If words gets out that it takes a minimum of 10 days before your cards are listed - they are going to think - forget it. I am starting to think that myself.

Now, what I don't understand is that a card/design is returned to me over and over for editing - when it could have been mentioned the first time - I fix the problems - and boom - it is done. I went on a trip for 3 days (away from my computer) and came back today - only to find that cards I edited earlier were returned to me for more editing. These are not things or more tweeking that I did before - they are bringing up totally new issues they have with the cards. This could have been mentioned the first time. Now - it is another 2 weeks before my cards are reviewed and processed. I have been uploading designs (like 10 a day) for about a week - I have about 70 cards waiting for approval - only 6 have been approved (since the middle of August mind you) and about 10 cards keep getting returned to me for this that and the other?

Now, I am just voicing my opinons and concerns. I am not trying to stir a pot - and I am sure these comments have been voiced before. So, please - I am not trying to get anyone upset. I am just wondering if Greeting Card Universe should seriously think about their approval process. I have never gone through such a process in all of the websites I am listed on? I have these designs listed on a couple of other sites - they print just fine and I have not had to constantly tweek and trim and remove this and remove that. One says I have to put text inside? I create blank cards. Where did it say I have to put text. I have many cards that don't have text and they didnt' get returned for that reason? I don't want to have text in it because I want to have blank cards in my store. I put them in the blank card categories to state so.   Shocked

Hi Marlo...Welcome to GCU.  First, no need to apologize for the multiple postings, this seems to occur to all of us now and then.

We all remember the frustration you feel when we started and please do keep in mind that one of the primary reasons GCU is giving Hallmark a run for their money is because of this review process.  Though, if as you say, you had cards returned after edits for yet another issue that was not mentioned the first time, I agree that is not the norm and all I can say speaking as an artist here; the reviewers are people too and they make mistakes occasionally.

I'm not here to speak for GCU, only to offer some info that has helped many of us when we started out at GCU.  If you have not visited the Wiki, do so.  There is some very helpful information that is worth your time.  Also, one of GCU's best selling artist (well over 10,000 cards); Corrie Kuipers took the time to create a very good tool for beginners and it's definitely worth a good read and periodic reference.  You'll find that link here:

http://www.squidoo.com/GCU101

Though I will be the first to agree that the review process could use some tweaking, keep in mind a couple of things.  First of all GCU is only about 3-years-old.  For a young company, they have taken great strides.  That is not only incredibly impressive from a business standpoint, but it should also help you to understand that the growth GCU is experiencing will result in processes that need improvement and they will continue (as always) to do the best they can to create a happy environment for both the customer and the artists.

With all that said, you may communicate with your reviewer via the email they send you and often that will speed up edits.  Good luck to you and I love your cards!

Wow - thank you Doreen. I wasn't aware they were so young - that is good thing to know and well - yes it is quite a stride for a business so young. So, good information - I will check out all of what you suggested. I am sure I can pick up some good information. I got an email from another artist just a little while ago stating they could help me with the newbie and aches and pains. I am quite impressed with the support I am getting and the fact everyone is wanting/willing to help. Thank you!

It's kind of funny - after I posted what I posted - I went and had dinner. I sat there thinking - did I get too harsh in my posting - or did I complain too much? Was I over reacting or just reacting when I should have just done the edits and moved on? I do have to say - I know they are people - I guess I just was frustrated that each card I edited before (all nine) was returned for more edits. I can understand it will take me a while to figure this out and get it down to the point I understand what to do and what not to do. I guess I am just overwhelmed by the policy after policy - that is all. I will be ok and stop complaining - I promise. LOL Now - I go get a glass of wine - sit down to do the edits - and life will be good again! LOL

You are welcome Marlo.  Enjoy that glass of wine, you deserve it!  Not only do you have wonderful cards and a beautiful store front, you have a terrific attitude and that's what it takes to survive in the art world.  I will enjoy watching your store grow and you may add me to your contact list should you ever need help.

Have a great evening!

Welcome to GCU Marlo!

Please familiarize yourself with much of our ins & outs via our wiki page.  It saves new artists much time and frustration:
http://wiki.greetingcarduniverse.com

Please pay special attention to the Card Template and 1/4 inch margin allowance.  Also the tips for keywords, titles and inside verses.  You are correct, you do not have to have inside verses as long as your cover image speaks to your chosen category.  Also cards with inside verses do sell better.

Also please see here re: our review times & holiday card lead times:
http://www.greetingcarduniverse.com/forum/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1234562095

We do seem to be in a slump with up to 2 weeks review time.  But again, with enough planning turnaround time should not be a big issue.  Holiday cards should be submitted several months before the actual holiday, a few weeks is just not enough.  We are already seeing Christmas sales.

As for multiple issues on the same card, you are right.  The reviewer should do their best at raising all issues at the same time to avoid additional delays.

Let us know if you have any other questions and good luck to you!

Thank you Mindy! Yea - I was posting out of frustration - so I am sorry. I have read the Wiki and I think I am starting to understand what I need to do and not do. The margin thing I am trying to fix before it gets to approval stage - so I am trying to get better on that. Plus - the keywords - I am trying to go by what your policies state. So...I think I am getting it. Aches and Pains of being a newbie. It is so nice to see cards getting approved and posted! Yea!

So thank you to everyone for letting me vent and the nice replies. I have hundred's of designs sitting on my computer to upload - designs I created for my own printing business and other sites. So, I am going to be busy. I will try to make sure I get them designed properly and keyworded properly to save hassle for the reviewers. Thank so much again - Everyone have a great holiday weekend!  Smiley

Hi guys, the problem I have with the time it takes for reviews is that even though it is only mid-sept, it will be another week or two by the way things go before my cards are approved and I live in Australia so it then takes a further 2 weeks for my cards to get to me! yes I order my own cards and sell them in store here.
Should I then start this process in July to have them in time for Xmas sales? Just a thought and not trying to be harsh but it really does seem to take a long time and then when you have to add weeks for postage that doesn't help. Oh and yes! Unfortunately it does take an average of 2 weeks for my cards to get to me from GCU  undecided

I am at the point I feel the need to say also. I have had customers who wished to purchase here ordering my cards on a site i have from Australia and receiving them before I can even get them approved here. The sad part is that they are better from here. But it is just taking so long for the process lately.  cry
