Request for Rules or Guidelines Please
Aug 5th, 2010, 4:39pm

Could someone tell me please is there anywhere I can find either a help page or list of rules for categories and keywords?

I have been trying hard to abide by all the requests that I receive from the review team and use these as an opportunity to learn and improve but am finding that there are a few inconsistancies.

Example: My recently approved card 661095 "Will you be my Bridesmaid" has been put in the Friends category with the comment that this card clearly addresses the Friend relationship and does not fit into the general category. The only reason I can see for this decision is that I have put a verse inside the card with the word friend in it. The term was meant to be used as a General description for a bridesmaid not a specific relationship.

I have been lead to believe that the verse is not as important as the front of the card since it can be edited or removed by the buyer. That being the case if I remove the verse this card now fits the general category.

To make matters worse I have been checking out the top cards in this category and of the most popular 35 five mention the word Friend in the verse and one has friendship on the front card. Fine so far until I noticed that all but 1 is in the general category and only 1 is included in the Friends category.

I could accept this assessment if it had Friend on the front of the card but as I particularly wanted this card in the General category as I assume people are more likely to have more than one bridesmaid possibly from difference parts of their life.

In an effort to try and generate sales I have taken on board the suggestion that I don't put up blank cards and have been working on verses to make them more attractive to buyers. If putting a verse in is going to effect the category choice so much I will simple stop making the effort as designing cards is hard enough without trying to come up with verses.

The way I see it, the outside of the card should be used 1st to establish category and the verse should be used 2nd for any sub-categories

Is it possible to get the list of rules or guidelines used to train the reviewers so that we could possibly review our own cards before submission and thus save time on re-submits for the review team.

Also I notice there are a few cards that have been created exactly the same but with different verses or category choices. Is it possible to maybe have a section for Artists to put their verses in so that buyers could pick and choose which verse they would like to use instead of having to search through the same cards from the same Artist to get the verse they want.

It is hard to follow the rules when they are not clear. KISS (keep it super simple)

I have been reading the Wiki page and Forum in a effort to get clarity but the only dedicated reference I can find on the subject is as follows:
http://wiki.greetingcarduniverse.com/index.php/Creating_and_Maintaining_your_Car ds#Card_Maintenance
     •      KEYWORDS - enter descriptive words and phrases, separated by commas, to describe this card. Aim for 10 terms. These are used by search engines to select your card. Do not enter the category, artist or store name, or card title. Words like Greeting Card are also not needed. Repeating keywords will not improve search results so donot repeat keywords.
     •      IMPORTANT - Use keywords that are descriptive to the image/art that are only otherwise seen. This will help shoppers find exactly the cards they are searching for. For example: colors, animal breeds, flower varieties, etc. Only use keywords that apply. Including a list of relationships or occasions that are not specific to this general card are misleading and will produce incorrect search results for shoppers.

CATEGORIES - You can select up to 2 categories appropriate for your card. In many cases, only 1 category is appropriate. Select them one at a time from the pop-up menu. You can delete the category choice at anytime by clicking the Red X. You cannot change categories once a card is approved. See CATEGORY TIPS for more information.

Hi Deborah,

The simple answer to your primary question 'can you get a copy of the rules the reviewers use...?" is no.  I asked for that myself when I started and did a fair amount of ranting to no avail  Grin

You may find some further explanations in the link below which was written by Corrie, one of GCU's best selling artists and its very helpful...you'll find that here

http://www.squidoo.com/GCU101

Keep in mind that the categories are meant to be very specific and as Corrie says in GCU 101 "you can ONLY categorize a card by what it IS, not what it COULD BE".

Hopefully the above link will help you.  Good luck!

p.s.  I have the same issue you do with looking at the first page or so of cards in a given category and using them as reference for what is acceptable...the answer is DON'T!  I have complained about this A LOT but the intention seems to be that older cards which were accepted into a category before those rules were tighten will not be required to be changed.  I don't agree with this, but it seems to be the lay of the land.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

As a set of guidelines this link is FANTASTIC. It had everything I was looking for and more. Why is it not easier to find!

I have no problem following the rules and now I understand them more clearly hopefully I can with guidance from the review team.

The forum post by Mindy on image limits and exceptions is also very well written and I guess from now on I will be utilizing my maximums a little more and continue to contribute to the backlog.

That's OK I can live with the delays, the reviewers can only do as much as they can. I appreciate that cards are reviewed it gives the site Integrity
